The Jack London I learned about in grade school was a seafaring adventurer. High school teachers taught me about his prolific pen and penchant for weaving together intoxicating descriptions of elemental sensations. It wasn’t until adulthood that I realized London was more complicated than his reputation. While he was noted for being a progressive socialist, London was also adept at dystopian race-baiting and published horribly xenophobic prose, including about Asian people. Some of his writing also revealed an affinity for white supremacy.

But he was a progressive socialist so all is good.

Socialist? That explains how he got a square named after him in the first place.
But the head of the SF school board called out Asians for acting like white supremicists.....

The author needs to worry more about who is attacking Asian-Americans in San Francisco. Then again, worrying about square names makes for a convenient distraction from all that real world stuff...(sigh)
Definitely the case. When I read London in school, I was instructed about his politics at home. I wasn't forbidden to read him, but I certainly learned about his politics that were never mentioned at school. As for the dystopian race-baiting and published horribly xenophobic prose, that doesn't surprise me one bit. That is a key component of progressivism. It just take different forms over time. Currently white, male, heterosexual, Christian, conservatives are the target.
They can say what they want, Sea Wolf was the very first book that I enjoyed reading. Have read many books since bit that is the one that got me started.
I believe they already have a Harvey Milk square, but maybe they could just add another one. Unlike Jack London, Milk focused on molesting boys, more in keeping with SFO values.

They should name it Betty Van Patter Square who was the Black Panthers white bookkeeper. She was ordered raped and beaten to death when she learned too much about the group
But he only molested white boys, so he was a racist, too.
They should definitely do that for neighboring Berkeley, which is named for a slave owner.
