Regeneron's cocktail, a mixture of two drugs, imitates antibodies that the body generates when fighting the coronavirus in order to boost the immune system

The antibody treatment was authorized by the FDA to treat mild to moderate cases of COVID-19 in November

Half a group of 4,500 mild-to-moderate COVID-19 patients at high risk of severe illness were given one of two doses of the drugs

Both doses were found to reduce the risk of hospitalization or death by about 70% compared to a placebo

Recovery time was also shortened, with symptoms only lasting about 10 days in the cocktail group in comparison with 14 days in the placebo group

Regeneron's coronavirus antibody cocktail is effective at treating mild to moderate cases of COVID-19, new late-stage trial results suggest.

The treatment is a mixture of drugs casirivimab and imdevimab, and was developed by the New York City-based company in partnership with pharmaceutical firm Roche.

Known as REGEN-COV, the cocktail imitates antibodies that the body generates when fighting the virus in order to boost the immune system.

The cocktail was given to former President Donald Trump when he was infected with COVID-19 in October 2020, and which he hailed as 'key' to his speedy recovery.

In trial data released on Tuesday, Regeneron said the combination reduced the risk of hospitalization and death by 70 percent compared to a placebo in non-hospitalized patients.

Regeneron’s antibody cocktail enabled 2 friends to get out an ICU in a couple of days and then come home.

They are doing okay. Just a little weak re stamina.

“Trump was right...”

He was indeed. The outcome of this trial is what most folks expected. Now, no one can, in good conscious, try to restrict its use at onset of the disease.

Supply is extremely limited. Distribution even moreso. Not like other drugs which you can get in a pharmacy. Of course they should produce as much as they can and get it out to hospitals and clinics. Has to be administered by IV if I recall.

Yes, all true. Production needs to be ramped up considerably.

A lot of folks went on and on about how Trump brushed off COVID and was back to 100% so quickly. No big deal! But based on his early need for oxygen supplementation, he was at very high risk of becoming a severe case, possibly ending up on a respirator or worse. Somewhere around 20% of COVID patients who require oxygen supplementation end up in ICU. Fortunately, he had access to the best medical care and experimental drugs, and responded well to the treatments he received. Unfortunately, there is nowhere near enough of this drug to treat everyone who needs it.

For people already diagnosed with WiFlu and thought to be at risk of getting seriously ill:

“Only about one percent of patients given either dose developed COVID-19-related complications compared to about three percent in the placebo groups.”

Got that? It lowers the risk from 3% to 1% in those already infected in thought be at risk of getting seriously ill. Not quite as dramatic as the headline makes it sounds.

That’s pretty dramatic when it applies to millions of people.

Moreso when it applies to someone you care about personally.

This is a safe and effective therapy. It’s not an instant cure, but it helps a lot of people and needs to be made more available.
