The alleged gunman charged with slaughtering 10 people at a Colorado supermarket bought an assault rifle a week prior to the shooting — and was caught “playing” with it by a family member, according to new court documents.
Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa purchased a Ruger AR-556 pistol on March 16 — six days before going on a deadly rampage at the King Soopers in Boulder, according to an affidavit unsealed Tuesday.
His sister-in-law, whose name is redacted, told investigators that she saw Alissa, 21, “playing with a gun she thought looked like a ‘machine gun'” in the days prior to the shooting, the court papers say.
“Alissa had been talking about having a bullet stuck in the gun and was playing with the gun,” the affidavit reads.
The document notes that the sister-in-law — who was tracked down by detectives at Alissa’s home on Monday night — was “hesitant to mention” what she’d seen.

As explained in an earlier post, an AR pistol is a way around having to pay the $200 tax for an SBR. A good stock is much better, but a brace makes the AR pistol a very effective close in system. And the velocity of a .223 round compared to a pistol caliber round makes it much more deadly. So its not just ‘sick’ looks.

But was it an “assault pistol?”

And it is used the exact way you would use short barrel rifle. And for all practical purposes they ARE short barrel rifles. And that’s ok by me. I see no reason why short barrel rifles should be illegal. They are no more concealable or deadly than a semi-auto version of a Mac-10 or Uzi.
That’s like saying it’s more deadly to get run over by a semi tractor trailer going 50 than it is getting run over by an SUV. Both are super deadly and more than enough to kill you.
Your reply is misplaced. AR Pistol or rifle, you can see its effectiveness from the fact that 10 people are dead and no injuries reported. With a traditional pistol, unless its a head shot, you have a 90% survival chance given immediate medical attention. I am just commenting on facts, not diving into minutia like the reduced velocity due to shorter barrel. If you had one to trade I would not take it. I went the full SBR route.

The higher velocity changes the damage mechanics. That is why a rifle is always preferred to a pistol, and the only reason you have a pistol is to fight your way back to the rifle you never should have dropped. Unless its impractical to have the rifle of course, like while walking the mall.
A couple of young men ran out of the store and reported. They said that the dead victims stood still instead of running. They were likely shot point blank. I’ll concede pistols and head shots, though, and have sneered at complainers on ranges after practicing and qualifying with head shots since the ‘80s. ;)
In a shoot out situation where you are likely to take one or perhaps two rounds, then certainly a rifle round is deadly due to increased muzzle velocity, just as that’s true of a pistol caliber carbine. In an ambush situation where you are quite likely to take 4 or more rounds the chances of survival drop dramatically. In that scenario dead is dead. I also do think, for me at least, a full stock isn’t really “much better” than a brace to shoot from the shoulder with this weapon. I’ve shot 5.56 from a rifle/carbine using a classic wooden stock, full Magpul stock (with cheek riser), a skeleton magpul stock and a hand brace. I shoot the same with each out to 100-150 yards. There’s not enough recoil with a 5.56 to make much, if any, difference. Once you step to 30 cal. that can change.
