US officials who are ready to fight China over Taiwan don't understand how much is at stake

US defense officials are increasingly warning of the potential for conflict with China over Taiwan.

There is almost no way in which the US could intervene in that conflict without devastating losses.

Many of America's leading military and political figures have issued increasingly alarmist warnings in recent days about the potential for conflict with China, especially related to issues surrounding Taiwan.

But before the US gets into a crisis that brings it to the threshold of war - or finds itself stumbling into one - policymakers and military leaders need to address some hard realities.

There is almost no scenario in which the United States can successfully intervene in a war between China and Taiwan that will not leave our country in far worse shape than it is right now; in a worst-case scenario, American territory could be struck by nuclear missiles.

In testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee last week, Adm. Phil Davidson, commander of US forces in the Indo-Pacific, warned that Chinese military developments looked to him like a nation planning for a war.

Davidson added that he believed China would attempt to forcibly reunify Taiwan "in the next six years." To guard against this possibility, Davidson asked Congress to provide a whopping $27 billion in additional funding over the current defense budget.

“issues surrounding Taiwan” = China’s imminent invasion.

China may, may, take over Taiwan but they’ll be pulling back a bloody foot over it; a pyrrhic victory comes to mind.

China will do this thru a really tight air/sea embargo. They will not have to fire one shot.

So if you just let China take Taiwan, you will have to let them have Midway, Hawaii, etc., and even then you won’t be able to avoid devastating losses. Crocodile. Have some neighbors. Eat me last. If you fight them on Taiwan, you may have devastating losses, alright. But you will be suffering them on your terms, not theirs, and stopping them before their territorial ambitions get any further, and with a committed ally in the Taiwanese, who are defending their home.

Yeah, yeah. Not our circus. I’ve heard it before. It is. America’s circus, America’s monkeys. Too late to stick your heads in the sand and tell the world to ‘go ‘way’ or let the bully eat your lunch.

China will tighten their grip on China over the next year and a half as Biden wonders where he is.

"Why does China even care about Taiwan?"

Because in a totalitarian culture, where "saving face" is the highest priority, you can not have a rebellious family member declaring independence.

Especially one like Taiwan that clearly demonstrates the benefits of repudiating China's governing style and social and economic policies.

China is doubling down on its territorial claims and that's causing conflict across Asia

I wonder if you are correct. I see such technology that can hear you, see you and predict you next move. All your finances, work product, likes, dislikes, hobbies and even books you read (Kindle) or Amazon are tracked.

Are we the chicken running around headless?

“Why does China even care about Taiwan?”

Point of pride, and a loose end after the revolution. Taiwan is where the Kuomintang government fled after the communists launched their coup. Technically, the government of Taiwan is the legitimate government for all of China. As long as they exist, the commies in Beijing have a constant reminder that they’re usurpers rather than the “people’s government”.

We probably couldn’t physically stop China from invading Taiwan. But if you war game it out correctly there is almost no chance that China would gain anything from it - unless they bribe all the politicians from India to London to D.C. And even then it’s still iffy.

Keep up the pressure on China over their treatment of the Uighurs. Set the stage now before they oppress other peoples.

Nuclear weapons will NEVER be used again in anger. There is no scenario where a nuclear power gains an advantage by pulling nuclear trigger first.

Why did Hitler care about Austria? Same thing.

Taiwanese are short, yellow-skinned with black hair and slanty eyes, and they talk and write Chinese. Therefore, they must be compelled to join the Master Race.

“in a worst-case scenario, American territory could be struck by nuclear missiles.”

Fake scare tactic. That is the one thing that would NEVER happen.

Agreed although the word “never” should not be used when assessing probability.

"whopping"? That's a joke. Those are peanuts.

China won't attack the United States. Easier to buy the politicians who will hand the US to them.

What I’ve seen indicates that it will not be a cake walk for China even without our help.

Trump had the right idea, ie a coalition, and to strengthen our position, but you have Biden and Susan Rice...

Prediction

1. Iran will develop nukes... Israel will be forced to attack
2. NOKO will resume missile testing. We will do nothing... nothing.
3. China will menace Taiwan, and eventually there will be some open conflict and we will lose some sailors, and Biden will back down.
4. Russia has the green light they need to invade whomever the hell they wish to.

Sun Tsu, best if your enemy does not want to fight you. Expect nonstop articles on why the takeover of Taiwan is inevitable and there’s nothing we can do.
