At the Condado Vanderbilt hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Christian Correa clocked in to work the night-shift as a doorman and braced for the worst.
Correa, who is also a bellman at the hotel, has seen a surge in American tourists coming to the US territory in the last three months and the hotel has been busy. Although he used to enjoy high season before the pandemic, recently, many tourists arriving to Puerto Rico have enraged local residents and hospitality workers as the island eases its Covid-19 restrictions.
“The tourists think they can do whatever they want,” says Correa, 24, who is also a student at the University of Puerto Rico. “We’ve seen fights, parties in the rooms and aggressive behavior.”
Low-cost flights to Puerto Rico have enticed many travelers to choose the island as a vacation spot during the pandemic. A one-way flight to Puerto Rico from Florida booked two days in advance could be as low as $62.

The combination of US residents wanting to escape cold weather, cheap flight tickets and easing restrictions on the island has been bringing tourists en masse.

As far as PR is concerned I have only spent time on the north coast and a single trip to El Yunque. Will make it to Culebra next time I am there and hope to also brave the ruta panoramica.
Isla Mona appeals to me, but is a pricey trip and I am not into camping.
I hope one day to get there. Would love to fly to PR, then do a cruise of the deep Caribbean.

This is ANTIFA prepping themselves. PR has to agree to statehood. Screw up the tourist trade and more of them will vote to go to suck on Biden’s/Kamala’s teat. Oh! Wait! Those two are dried up. The taxpayer has to provide the milk.
Southern Caribbean cruises are the best. Hope it restarts soon too, as it is my business.
What the heck is the matter with these people? They’re doing the same thing in Miami.
These gatherings are organized or at least publicized by “black fraternities,” most of whose followers are not “fraternity” members, are not in college, and in fact are lucky if they graduated elementary school. Some responsible black people should call them on this, because they don’t represent black Americans...but they’re sure giving them a bad name.
There are horrible white college kid events in Florida, but they’re usually just gross and disgusting...too much drinking, too many girls flashing their endowments from the balconies of the hotels, too many drunks pounding on doors. The local authorities need to crack down on that, too, and in many places they have.
The black events often end badly, mostly because nobody has any idea who is there or is responsible for them, so it goes out on social media and becomes a thuggish riot in no time at all.
same thing in vegas lately - wealthier/educaated folks aren’t traveling, so the rock-bottom prices on flights and hotels brings out the usual suspects who otherwise couldn’t afford to be there.
I always though that the southern part of PR would have had nice beaches as it is on the Carribean side and not subject to the Atlantic currents, by I heard that is unfortunately not the case. Playa Flamenco it will be next trip, despite needing to get on a small plane.
I’m reading a book where some sailors and Marines bumped into Elizabeth Taylor while on shore leave in Cannes during the outbreak of the Korean War. Quite a story. She entertained them for a little while and allow snapshots. They asked her if she could be a gal and break a hundred dollar bill. She said she didn’t have any cash on her but to go look for her new husband Nick somebody back at the hotel and he would help them. Classier times.
When I was a child/teen in the 70s, we had to dress up to fly anywhere. My mother was an airline employee and we always traveled on stand-by/non-revenue, so if you wanted to score a first class seat, men had to be wearing coat and tie and the ladies dresses. But even those in business and coach had the decorum to dress up, anyway.
Now with Spirit, et al, you are just riding the city bus.

You are right. The Caribbean side beaches are not so nice/sandy until you get to the extreme southwest corner of the island, Cabo Rojo/Boquerón/Combate, and then up the west coast to Rincón, Añasco and the old Ramey Air Force base area.
Culebra island is my favorite. Not only Flamenco, but Zoní and Tamarindo. The problem is that the government run ferry service has collapsed, and it is spotty at best. They finally gave up and gave a contract to HMS Ferries/Horn Blower, but that won’t be up for about another year. So the best option to get to Culebra and Vieques for that matter, is a puddle jumper flight.
They have never come this far before. I remember while in the service, stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama, we would go down to Panama City Beach and would see this kind of behavior. But never in my island. I mean, we can be boisterous ourselves, Puerto Ricans, but never destructive, lewd, and hostile to locals.
I remember when stealing hotel towels was outrageous.
