In a new essay published Thursday, Capt. Kristen Griest, the first U.S. Army infantry officer, said lowering Army fitness standards could hurt the Army’s combat readiness and reduces the trust female soldiers can expect from their fellow soldiers.
In her essay for West Point’s Modern War Institute, Griest, who also became the first of three women to earn the Army Ranger Tab, said creating a separate fitness standard for women would reduce the overall effectiveness of Army combat units.
Referring to a proposed standard for women to run a two-mile test in under 21 minutes, Griest said “the presence of just a handful of individuals who cannot run two miles faster than twenty-one minutes has the potential to derail a training exercise, not to mention an actual combat patrol. Entire companies of 130 soldiers will be forced to frequently halt operations in order to medically evacuate the ill-prepared as they succumb to fatigue and injury.”
Griest said other soldiers will have to take up the burden of their unfit teammates, which could be inconvenient for training but deadly in combat.

IIRC double time march speed was 8 mph...or 2.67 miles in 20 minutes...that ain’t running.
I’m in my 60s. A back injury 12 years ago prevented me from jogging for nearly 10 years. But I can run 2 miles in under 21 minutes...
Is a condom still SOP for covering the muzzle of weapon to protect from water incursion?
Physical fitness of Marines is measured bi-annually in a physical fitness test (PFT) and in a (less rigorous) Combat Fitness Tests. These tests are conducted by the unit commanders. The scores are one element of the evaluation criteria that’s used for enlisted promotion.
But, if the Marine fails the PFT, counseling and eventual disciplinary steps are taken. Remedial physical training programs are initiated and if, over a fixed period of time, the service member cannot pass the test, they’re administratively separated ....
...in theory. In practical reality - particularly since retention became a significant problem during endless Iraq and Afghanistan deployments, no one is separated unless they simply refuse to train (which happens more than you might think because for people who want out, that’s their out). They’re lenient on male Marines, but they’re significantly more lenient with WMs.
Since I left active service, they’ve adopted even friendlier PFT standards allowing Marines to retake the PFT in order to improve their score, which as I said, helps for promotion. Now, if you get a bad PFT, you don’t have to wait 12-mos, as you did before.
What’s worse is back in the day, poor PFT score from an officer simply was not tolerated, at all. Now...it’s tolerated, particularly for female officers.
Oh you don’t think?!
I was stationed with females. It wasn’t troubling about double standards with fitness. (And hair policy; that’s another argument). When a slit got impregnated, they were not 100% for a year. A YEAR! Nine-month for the pregnancy, then maternity leave, and optional paid leave behind that.
If you haven’t, read the book Last Stands, pls do so.
IMO, women have valuable roles. But not in front-line combat units. Plus, LGBQZYZ are just adding fuel to the fire...another argument!
Care to explain?
Explain what?
As a 19 year old 11B the two miles was 11
:57. I was not the top dog.
Your comment. How does it relate to this article?
“A YEAR! Nine-month for the pregnancy, then maternity leave, and optional paid leave behind that.”
I’ve heard of women who timed kids to avoid PT, etc., for years.
Exactly the response called for.
No, quite a while back the US military introduced purpose made covers.
https://www.joesarmynavyonline.com/6-Pack-GI-AR-15-M16-Muzzle-Cover-p/215364-6.htm
“Actual US GI M16/AR15 plastic muzzle covers fits snugly over most standard AR muzzles. Helps to protect the bore from mud and dust. Brand new. NSN 5340-00-880-7666. Original packaging is dated 06-11 and says: CAP, PROTECTIVE, DUST “
I maxed sit-ups & push-ups on the Army APFT for the 27-31 Male age group. At age 53.
With one bad knee, I was on the 2.5-mile Walk (35 minutes to pass). Got down to 27 minutes flat. Passed many (much younger) females on their 2-mile run. Finished ahead of more than a few.
Saw far too many Soldiers (all ranks) strain to get to the minimums for SU & PU, and then quit rather than exert for a full 2 minutes.
Pathetic at so many levels.
Strange how the obvious makes the news nowdays.
When I was in the USAF woman had to run the mile and a half in under 16 minutes...I did it in 11 minutes in basic...
Ya think? Why does it take a woman to speak sanity? Flipping combat arms is hard, nasty work.
“Liberalism has taught women that they need never endure hardship or discomfort, and when exposed to it they must complain and demand the circumstances causing it be modified to accommodate them. In combat they’ll find it not as easy as just calling their lawyer.”
I was reading a series of tweets from members of the military about what Tucker said, and there was some bitchy little millennial officer who didn’t like something that was posted in reply to her, so she screenshot the comment and is going straight to DOD tomorrow morning about it.🙄
IMO, co-ed units are toxic to morale, cohesion, and combat effectiveness. Remove females from combat arms, and bring back the WAC and the WAVES.
The military did just fine for over 200 years without women in combat arms.
“Look how fat Vindman was yet was still allowed to wear the uniform.”
Vindman isn’t your average fat boy who can’t make tape.
Vindman rode greased skids (waivers) his whole career because he was a subject matter “expert” of some sort. His little stunt in Ranger School for example should have not only gotten him kicked out of the school, BUT also kicked out of the Army. But his special skill set waivers saved him.
Many people can walk two miles in under 21. That this is a standard is crazy.
