who appoints whomever finishes out the term?
Unless feds are looking to indict him or he’s got a terminal illness him I do not believe that Mitch would resign. That SOB loves power, prestige, and privilege and as long has he has them he won’t give them up willingly.
Those that have chosen not to run should quit now if a republican can be appointed. It’s funny but any democrat can see which direction the GOP is headed and I don’t think they’re very comfortable with it. Why help us get a head start on ‘22?
It’s almost like somebody is getting ready to expose some dirt on Mitch.
Probly his wife. She's probly been Senator all along.
I was at the Trump convention in Lexington. Mitch got on stage to give a brief speech. When he walked up to the stage, he looked like an old man who was trying to get around without his walker. I mean, he looked 10 years older than he does on television.
I was shocked.
Bullcrap.
Seven terms in the Senate.
***********
The Founders would never have imagined this would remotely be possible. There should be term limits. Three terms max for senators would put an end to the careerism that is plaguing the institution.
Well, I can say I have felt the same about watching the direction of the Democrat Party for decades. Should have driven a stake through the heart that metamorphosis a long time ago.
In 37 states (Ky is one), U.S. Senate vacancies are temporarily filled by gubernatorial (who’s a Democrat) appointment. The appointee serves until the next statewide general election (Nov 2022) is held; the winner in that election serves out the remainder of the term
Why would the Kentucky governor sign a bill that strips him of his power to appoint a senator in the event of a vacancy?
Another example was Strom Thurmond. Dude was in his 90s and on oxygen being pushed around in a wheel chair but by God he was going to hold that office until the day he died. And he did.
As of this moment, it’s the governor who of course is a Dem. BUT, legislation is quickly working its way through the KY legislature that would, as I understand it, cede the authority to name a replacement to the party that outgoing Senator represents. I’m not entirely sure how that mechanism would work as I haven’t read the bill itself yet.
Even if the Dem governor vetoes that bill - and he almost certainly will - the Republicans hold veto-proof majorities in both houses of the state legislature.
The Framers imagined that the state legislatures would never send the same person back for 30 years.
The 17th amendment changed all that.

He wouldn’t. But, the GOP holds veto-proof majorities in the KY state legislature. So, the veto becomes moot.
Who was going to do that? The republicans agree with them more than they agree with us.
Well we can hope that McConnell stays in place until that legislation passes?
EXPOSE him and his wife’s CHINA CP Connections!!
I’m sure he will. From what I understand, the legislation will move forward in a matter of weeks if not days. And, I don’t believe McConnell is looking to exit until sometime later in the summer, if at all.
