“The removal of so many iconic, beautiful palm trees, including royal palms, will have a negative impact on our historic, cultural and economic brand,” Meiner wrote in an email. “Millions of tourists throughout the U.S. and the world annually visit Miami Beach and palm trees are an integral part of our brand. There are only a handful of tropical climates in the United States where palm trees can grow.”

Elizabeth Wheaton, the director of some aspect of the Florida government, wants to replace the palm trees with “canopy trees,” presumably for more shade.
Those palms don’t belong to her, nor do they belong, frankly, to the citizens of Florida. They are part of the United States’ natural heritage.
Everyone who has ever lived there or visited there should give this woman a call.
It would be like Colorado deciding to blast off the top of Pike’s Peak to make room for a high-altitude resort, or, if it were possible, Arizona deciding to fill in the Grand Canyon to create the world’s largest swimming pool.
These are extreme examples but I think the palms should be treasured.
“Cancel Wheaton, Not the Palms!” There’s an idea for a protest sign!
Dr. Seuss warned about killing trees.
bttt
This You Tube video was embedded with the article. I forgot to post it up front. It explains there’s “science” behind removing palm trees in the name of Climate Change - that Miami is going to be “re-forested” by replacing palm trees with a shade trees for a “shade canopy.”

Bring on the Lorax.
Are the palm trees native to southern Florida? If so, then the “climate freaks” are going against the green lovers hate of ‘invasive species.’
LOL, no problem!
Maybe someone better with Photoshop than me can take one of Stalin's famous pictures, replace his soon to be executed ministers with Suess characters and then remove them.
OK, trees that break instead of bend in a hurricane.
Got it, great plan.
Years ago it was called Lethal Yellowing, same thing I suppose. Killed Coconut palms
No I think they were all imported. At least all those tall pretty ones. Scrub palm is native but only grow 2-3 feet tall. There are some larger native palms that get 20-30 foot maybe. There’s guys that will go out into the swampy woods and dig them up to sell. They go for $100 ea and it takes all day to dig one out by hand. Mostly black guys doing it. This was 20 years ago. Not sure if they still do it or what the price might be for them today. When the fronds are trimmed, it leaves a 12 inch spike like thing sticking up and palmetto bugs aka super sized roaches live in them.
MY first thought as well.
Follow the money.
Whenever a building or even a sidewalk is being “modernized,” try to check where the marble and slate are going after they’ve been removed. You won’t be able to. Somebody’s mansion.
THAT was my thought...do these people know what happens to the trees they want to plant in wind? Sheesh.
Dont forget a root ball that wont hold the things in place come Cat 4 time.
These people are idiots.
The Lord put Palms in these regions for a purpose and reason. Just because a deciduous tree will survive dont mean it is beneficial to any thing other than a wacko Liberal a-hole
Thanks to all!!
Yeah, Hurricane Andrew with 120 mph winds. Houses will be crushed, 100lb limbs will be flying. Brilliant idea. Those palms just bend over. Might get all their fronds blown off but they grow back and don’t do any damage when they hit a building or car.
The greenies are going to save the planet but kill most people.
Truly peak Progressivism.
The environmentalists are a death cult. They demand the crab fleet die and never use pots as whales get entangled. They use the same pictures and stories over and over with no context killing the fishermen, same with salmon( of course weed farmer pollute the rivers )
They demand billions of humans die so the animals can be “happy” while denying CO2.
They cut off water supplies fro delta smelt, killing farms and now it’s arsenic.
These people are murderers.
U of Florida, FSU, or some other?
