As Verlyn Cardona recovered at a hospital, she was trying to speak between sobs.
"My heart is broken," she said.
Cardona and her daughter, Yesenia, 23, were riding in the Ford Expedition truck that crashed in Southern California, leaving 13 people dead and a dozen others injured.
Yesenia was one of 13 people who died Tuesday when the van they were packed in collided with a semi-trailer truck carrying gravel in Imperial County.
The region is known to be a human smuggling route. The mother and daughter made the trip from Chiquimulilla, Guatemala, to Mexicali, Baja California, on the northern border of Mexico, with the intention of crossing into the United States.
"I can only tell you that they were looking for the American dream," Rudi Domínguez, brother of the surviving woman and uncle of the deceased woman, told Noticias Telemundo hours after the accident. He was notified by hospital officials that he had relatives who were involved in an accident.
Yesenia's father, Maynor Melendrez, who immigrated to New York 15 years ago, told the AP there were "no words" to describe what happened to his daughter. She had wanted to follow in his footsteps and come to the U.S. “I couldn’t see her again, I couldn’t hug her.”

Are we billing Mexico for the medical treatment?
She should have stayed in Mexico.
One of the accounts I read described an official saying there weren’t enough seatbelts for 25 people in the SUV; you can’t make this stuff up!
If the father immigrated here 15 years ago, why didn’t he bring the family in through chain migration?
“I can only tell you that they were looking for the American dream,”
They’d still be alive if they hadn’t broken our laws.

Exactly.. Stay home a d it wouldn’t have happened.
No sympathy here.
somebody will make that out to be “racist” ...somehow...somewhere...
because he’s here illegally too
Where’s that itty bitty violin ??
To me, the biggest surprise is the authorities and media haven’t charged the semi driver with something, anything to takeaway the headlines.
We should bill our politicians. Mexico was working with Trump to have the people caught trying to cross the border returned to Mexico and other countries.
Biden put a stop to this.
I will say, that Peterbilt did a great job stopping the illegals.....perhaps we can work out a government contract for them to continue the practice.

You’re a sick bastard. Not to mention sunshine, water, and fertilizer for driving the leftist agenda.
See, if we had Trump’s Wall, the poor woman would not have been killed. If it saves one life, it is good. Come on, man.
Are we supposed to feel sorry for people who died sneaking in to our country? I feel more sympathy for the driver of the gravel truck.
Does NBC, or any liberal media, ever run “heartbreaking” stories of Americans murdered by illegal aliens?
If all the illegals were to die while invading, it would be a good thing
We do not need the alien detritus
First they call it a truck, then a van but as you say, it's an SUV and even though it's full sized, no it's not made for 25 people. I'm guessing the girl had internal injuries from getting squished by 2-3 people behind her flying forward.
****”I can only tell you that they were looking for the American dream,” Rudi Domínguez, brother of the surviving woman and uncle of the deceased woman, told Noticias Telemundo6”...
Nothing says American Dream like crossing the border illegally and filing for welfare, food stamps, low income housing, 3 or 4 other handouts, living 10 to a room in an apartment complex you’ve turned into a mexican ghetto, fixing me up so I had to take $2 to 3 an hour less to get a job at all...so I could support over 50% of the illegals in our country...
With 6 years experience as a machinist, excellent references, capabilities most machinists never have - like TIG welding, brazing, custom tool grinding, measuring instrument calibration drew my own blueprints, lathe, milling machine, tool grinders, drill sharpeners, end mill sharpeners, drill press, surface grinder - I handed out 38 resumes in San Antonio, spent boatloads of money on gas for over 3 months before I finally got an interview.
I’d hand my resume to a secretary, more than a dozen looked at it and said it was the best resume they had ever seen. Over 3 months, nearly 40 shops, couldn’t even get an interview. Yet over half the shops I went to had several mexicans working. I already knew most were illegals, I’d seen that in other shops already. Nobody would do a thing about it. Sorry, we don’t have any openings. Thanks, Bill Clinton.
The last 2 jobs I finally did get, I had to take $2 and $3 an hour cut in pay to get hired at all.
And THAT, lady, is what you came here to do to other people. Sorry but I can’t feel sorry for you. If you had stayed where you belong, instead of breaking our laws to come here, you would still have a living daughter.
Instead of the “American Dream” you got a nightmare. Why didn’t something tell you 25 people in one vehicle is not safe? Why didn’t something tell you breaking another country’s laws is unacceptable? If your country was that bad, why didn’t you and your prior relatives put up a fight to make it better, instead of bringing your ghetto mentality here?
I’m all out of sympathy. Stopped feeling sorry for you people long before I saw groups of over 5000 walking here with their country’s flag in front of the group. If my country was bad enough I had to walk 2000 miles to get somewhere else, I’ll be damned if I’d bring the flag along. I’d burn it before I left. Go back where you belong and cry to someone else. Your people caused me enough trouble long ago. And I haven’t even mentioned the theft, noise, trash in my yard and other up close and personal hassles.
