Gov. Greg Abbott announced Tuesday he's lifting the mask mandate in Texas, even as health officials warn not to ease safety restrictions.
Abbott made the announcement during a Lubbock Chamber of Commerce event where he issued an executive order rescinding most of his earlier executive orders like the mask mandate.
Abbott said businesses of any type will be allowed to open 100% beginning March 10.
"Too many Texans have been sidelined from employment opportunities. Too many small business owners have struggled to pay their bills. This must end. It is now time to open Texas 100%," he said.
Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves also announced Tuesday the end to all county mask mandates and that businesses can reopen at 100% capacity. The new orders will go into effect Wednesday, Tate said.
"Our hospitalizations and case numbers have plummeted, and the vaccine is being rapidly distributed. It is time!," Reeves tweeted Tuesday.
Abbott's announcement comes as Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations continue to drop across the country. However, health experts say relaxing restrictions now could lead to another surge, especially with the variants spreading.
In the last year, Texans have "mastered the daily habits to avoid getting Covid," Abbott said. As of Monday, 6.57% of Texans have been fully vaccinated, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Abbott said Tuesday 5.7 million vaccine shots have been administered in the state, there is a surplus of personal protective equipment (PPE) and "10 million Texans have recovered from Covid."
"Removing state mandates does not end personal responsibility and caring for your family members, friends and others in your community," Abbott said. "People and businesses don't need the state telling them how to operate."

So far Texas has vaccinated about 12% of residents with at least a first shot. If that accounted for both shots a 12% immunity rate is pathetic. Cases are sure to rise.

You don’t think the only way to immunity is thru a vaccine? After a year, many people have already been exposed. Many probably never even knew it as they were asymptomatic. They’ve acquired immunity the old-fashioned way thru their own body’s self-defense mechanism.
Exactly. I am not sure what percentage that becomes when combined with the vaccinated numbers but as more and more get the shots, that percentage will only continue to climb.
In the meantime, businesses can begin recovering to a higher degree.

Won’t matter. Nearly every retail business and food service in Texas will still enforce the mask rule.

You added a percent sign. The case-fatality rate in the U. S. for COVID-19 is about 0.017 or 1.7%. This is about 17 times higher than the case-fatality rate of influenza (”the flu”) in 2018-2019 which was 0.00097 or 0.097%.

None of the places I go to enforce the mask rule, and I live in Montgomery county Texas.
Just as it should be. Besides, there is no reason that those who are still scared can't still wear masks when they go out into public places.
People are so freaked by the dire warnings of govt officials, that we see reporters in front of cameras wearing masks; drivers alone in vehicles wearing masks; people walking outside, alone, wearing masks...see how easily they trained some? And those same people are going to be resistant to changing back.
The craziest masker I’ve seen to date was a middle age woman wearing a bathrobe that went out to the driveway to retrieve the morning paper. She must be scared witless..

There is no cv19 pandemic. And there never was a cv19 pandemic. We have pandemics in other things, but those things don't create a pretend justification for mail-in ballots.

Amen they really want to pretend this is massively dangerous thing yet also want to allow thousands to flood the border and disperse into place like Texas without holding them and testing them before releasing. How fake. Sort of like months of violent riots were just fine according to “public health officials” because you know, racism is a bigger threat.

I’m a NYer and I say, “Thank God for Texas!” Where the hell would this country be without Texas?
