A 7-year-old from Alabama is selling lemonade to help pay for her brain surgeries

7-year old Alabama resident Liza Scott is selling lemonade to help pay for brain surgeries.

In late January, doctors found numerous cerebral malformations that require immediate attention.

The family has also set up an online fundraiser to help pay for expenses.

Seven-year-old Alabama resident Liza Scott is selling lemonade to help pay for her brain surgeries, local outlet WHNT reports.

The child is selling outside of Savage Bakery in Homewood, Alabama, which is owned by her mother, Elizabeth Scott. Interested customers can also place orders from the bakery online, with proceeds from the lemonade sales going to help fund Liza Scott's upcoming brain surgery.

In late January, Scott had suffered a Grand Mal seizure, and in the weeks following, neurologists and neurosurgeons discovered the child had numerous cerebral malformations that require immediate attention.

...Liza's mother wrote that the "overwhelming additional expenses, time away from work, and additional resources needed to keep up with things at home" has already started to pile up for the family. Elizabeth has purchased additional insurance, according to WHNT, but the family is already facing about $10,000 in-out-pocket-expenses.

"As a single mom and the financial supporter of both of my children, this is not something you can budget for," Scott told the outlet. For now, Scott wrote online that she is praying, and that God "allows the hard times in life to help others see His amazing love, protection, and faithfulness."

But we can send 25 million to Pakistan for “gender studies”.

Hope this not a scam, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

Didn’t see a mention of a doctor or anything else confirming this. If it is confirmed, I’ll make a contribution.

The mother has purchased “additional insurance”? I thought Obamacare solved the issue of pre-existing conditions; plus there is Medicaid.

A few years ago an evil witch told her little daughter that she had cancer in order to run a scam. Even shaved her head.

I am just a bit skeptical of these tug on the heart strings stories too.

Same here. Usually, these kinds of stories come out during the late Fall -- holiday season -- when peeps are more vulnerable.

Munchasen By Proxy is what some call it.
Purposely hurting one’s child in order to bring attention and sympathy to the Mother or custodial parent.
My personal guess is that this happens far more commonly these days than most people would want to admit. Especially if the ‘affliction’ is said to be Gender Dysphoria.

Well, it’s an article by BI...

But if true, seems like a good idea for the the young girl to be encouraged and involved in her recovery.

If that were my child, I would never allow that to happen.
Putting herself on exhibit with such a serious affliction.
People may think I put her up to it because I was too cheap or too disorganized to get proper help on my own.

A child should not have to keep explaining this to strangers, over and over, while holding a proverbial Tin Cup. That would traumatize a child, or make her jaded and cynical very early in life.

I am going to disagree and say not at age seven.

Tell her she is sick, yes. Tell her she is deathly ill and mommy cant afford to pay for her to get well?

Does not sit right with me.

I am of the opinion that some knowledge parents carry for their children because it is too big for them.

They are children. Not small adults.

YMMV

I agree the child should not be exposed to the financial complications.

Once again, ultra-generous Americans have NO understanding of the massive USA welfare state.

Children under age 18 from poor or low income families are eligible for Medicaid, which means 100% of her medical expenses are covered, unless this is some kind of experimental surgery or treatment.

This child is also eligible for 100% dental coverage and two free meals at school (or home) every day.

Since Medicaid is involved, travel expenses for special treatments are also covered.

And, many private organizations - e.g. Ronald McDonald House - provide free family housing near elite medical centers.

This is a tragic and very stressful medical issue - but lack of pediatric medical funding is NEVER an issue in the USA, even for illegal immigrant children.

I am just a bit skeptical of these tug on the heart strings stories too.

Your heart strings will be twanged a lot more when you find that when you allowed yourself to be conned into giving up Medicare Plans A, B, and D in exchange for a Medicare "Advantage Plan" that you've given up some important advantages.

All these TV advertisements feature the enticenebt of lowering or eliminating co=pays. But less than two months into the United Healthcare Advantage Plan I found I was to be charged @169 per scan for the computer-assisted tomography (CAT) scan and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan that my medical practitioner ordered cased on re-emerging of a meningioma growth in my head.

If I had simply retained the coverage that I had given up as of January 1, there would have been no co-pay. Since my only income is Social Security, I didn't feel I could afford the MRI, so I didn't get it. When I went to the appointment for it, they told me that I owed $160 foe it on order to have the scan done, and that I already owed another $160 for the preliminary CAT scan done the week before.

I had expected neither, not having read the fine print on the Advantage Plan, Having expected no co-pay as in the past on my previous Medicare Plans, and not being prepared, I just walked out, unable to pay.

So there. Conned by the Healthcare TV ads and phone calls from a half-dozen providers back last fall.

Be warned.

While what you said in the first sentence is true, but the key here is "poor or low income families". This woman owns her own business so she probably doesn't qualify financially. The second sentence I quoted is patently untrue! Lack of pediatric medical funding is absolutely not available to all children in this country. Many parents have medical bills that they have to pay out of pocket and some can't afford that. I have a friend who is helping pay for treatments for her granddaughter because insurance won't pay the entire bill and the parents make "too much money" to qualify for Medicaid!

This is exactly why I will continue to work so that I can afford my monthly $160 payment for my Supplemental Medicare plan rather than switching to the “Advantage” plan. Free isn’t really “free” in those Advantage plans.

When was the last time you saw a front page news story about an American child who died or was permanently disabled because the parents could not afford health care?

Answer: Not in the last 50 years

This is exactly why I will continue to work . . .

Yeah. I didn't figure that out until too late. I never was able to afford that "Supplemental" Plan.

At 84 tears young I'm still working--on my property to improve its salability, putting up ladders and replacing siding by myself, installing second-story replacement windows obtained from ReStore to lower heat bills, replacing burst hot water heater, keeping the lawn cut, etc.

At least, that's not laying around whining like some people find themselves stuck with. Sorry for that little seven-year-old and her mom. Pray for them is best one can do.
