Two Republican senators — Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Mitt Romney of Utah — got into a confrontation on the Senate floor Saturday after Romney voted with Democrats to allow witnesses in the impeachment trial of former President Trump.
Reporters sitting in the Senate gallery said they saw a “visibly upset” Johnson turn to Romney and point at him after the vote.
The two men then got into a back-and-forth, with Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) trying to play referee.
Voices were raised, and at one point Johnson was overheard saying he blamed Romney.
Johnson is a staunch Trump ally who argued the defense “eviscerated” the Democratic prosecutors and “blew their case out of the water.” Romney, a frequent Trump critic, voted to convict Trump on one count during last year’s impeachment trial. In the second trial, Romney voted both that the impeachment trial over whether Trump incited an insurrection on Jan. 6 was constitutional and for witnesses to be called.
Johnson on Saturday flashed his anger at reporters who later asked him about his exchange with Romney.
"Those are private. Those are private conversations," Johnson said.
"Reporters heard it," a reporter replied just off the Senate chamber. "I just want to make sure we’re getting it right."
"That’s grotesque you guys are recording us," the senator retorted.
"They were allowed to witness your proceedings" on the Senate floor, the reporter said.
Television cameras controlled by the Senate apparently did not capture the exchange.
Ron Johnson is one of very few Senators I like.
He shoulda took Romitt back in the office and beaten the Rat $h!+ out of him. Romitt is slug slime.
Throw all seven RINCrats out of the GOP.
Oh, but Romney’s done so much good for the republican party... Oh wait...
He’s dug his hole, now he gets to lie in it.
maybe the patriots should develop a hand signal like the cabalists do....I ‘d suggest a finger salute directed at them.....
Hey - not fair to rats....
He has a law degree from Harvard and an MBA. Not sure if he ever practiced law.
I like any senator who has his or her own mind there is a handful
we need to bring back duel laws in the united state specifically for those involved in politics. bur and Hamilton societal precedent. Would clean up the swamp fast.
If the Republicans need a sanctimonious dirt bag, we have our guy in Romney.
And Romney is a coward.
Shameful.....absolutely shameful.
An attack on our Constitution is a direct attack on the citizens of The United States.
Justice Roberts should have gone in with the military and shut this disgrace down.
i seriously don’t understand how the good people of Utah could send that man to congress. I think there is something really bad in his business background that he was terrified of Trump discovering.
That man is a one man wrecking machine for the Mormon religion in the eyes of the world.
He is a national figure and famous.. He dominates any primary or convention.
It’s like McCain in AZ. Hard to get rid of. Nearly impossible, sadly.
UNLES they turn against him back home which is possible. The people of Wyoming are turning against Cheney I sense.
Mitt must think he is safe to continually do what he does.
He should be thrown out of the Republican party!
Guessing voters gravitate to the more popular candidate regardless of the details.
The false Mormon Cult!
Romney the former failed Republican candidate for President is still very angry the successful President Trump did not appoint him as Secretary of State. He has held a grudge against President Trump ever since.
RonJohn is ready to rumble! He is MY senator and I am proud of his stand for President Trump
The GOP Civil War is on!
