GOP Sen. Cassidy: 'I voted to convict Trump because he is guilty'

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) tweeted on Saturday that he voted to convict former President Donald Trump in the Senate impeachment trial “because he is guilty.”

“Our Constitution and our country is more important than any one person. I voted to convict President Trump because he is guilty,” Cassidy tweeted.

Cassidy is one of seven Republicans who was convinced by the House managers' arguments and voted to convict Trump in a 57-43 vote.

Cassidy was joined by fellow Republican colleagues Sens. Mitt Romney (Utah), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Ben Sasse (Neb.), Patrick Toomey (Pa.) and Richard Burr (N.C.).

Cassidy’s decision was a surprise to some after he was seen on Friday with a statement that showed support for Trump’s acquittal, but his communications director stated that Cassidy had drafted two statements, one for and against Trump’s conviction.

Cassidy has previously said that that the House Managers had “done very well” with their arguments for Trump’s guilt.

However, the arguments fell short as conviction would have required 17 Republicans to side with the Democrats.

Since Trump was not convicted, he is allowed to run for a political office again. He has made clear he will stay involved in the political realm, but it is not clear what his future plans are with the Republican party.

How did LA elect this rat in sheep’s clothing?

The same way the election was stolen - a single big city outweighed the rest of the state.

In this case, New Orleans.

Sounds like slander as Trump was found not guilty.

Yes. He forgot to say "allegedly". Or "according to a source."

Slander.

“....The blowback from Republicans back home was swift and dramatic.

What blow back. Censure? Wrist slap? Timeout? No broccoli for dinner? If California can recall govenor after govenor, then its time to start recalling these pompous @ssholes. This jagoff just started a 6 year term. Lets see who even remember this 6 years from now?

“”I voted to convict President Trump because he is guilty,” Cassidy tweeted.”

Cassidy is an educated idiot. He probably thinks Joe Biden is innocent.

He was just reelected in 2020, so he’ll be inflicting pain on the American people for another 6 years.

He’ll be reelected again in 2026.

Can they impeach him? We’ve got to get back to Constitutional roots where senators are appointed by the state legislatures. Our founders once again, had it right!

“Its the seriousness of the charge which proves his guilt,”

He's too stupid to be a senator.

And this is yet another reason myself and lots of other Americans have happily left the Republican Party!

The GOP is dead to me!
