GOP Sen. Cassidy: 'I voted to convict Trump because he is guilty'

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) tweeted on Saturday that he voted to convict former President Donald Trump in the Senate impeachment trial “because he is guilty.”

“Our Constitution and our country is more important than any one person. I voted to convict President Trump because he is guilty,” Cassidy tweeted.

Cassidy is one of seven Republicans who was convinced by the House managers' arguments and voted to convict Trump in a 57-43 vote.

Cassidy was joined by fellow Republican colleagues Sens. Mitt Romney (Utah), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Ben Sasse (Neb.), Patrick Toomey (Pa.) and Richard Burr (N.C.).

Cassidy’s decision was a surprise to some after he was seen on Friday with a statement that showed support for Trump’s acquittal, but his communications director stated that Cassidy had drafted two statements, one for and against Trump’s conviction.

Cassidy has previously said that that the House Managers had “done very well” with their arguments for Trump’s guilt.

However, the arguments fell short as conviction would have required 17 Republicans to side with the Democrats.

Since Trump was not convicted, he is allowed to run for a political office again. He has made clear he will stay involved in the political realm, but it is not clear what his future plans are with the Republican party.

I would remind Sen Cassidy he took an oath to preserve and protect the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. The impeachment was unconstitutional, else the Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts would have presided. He sided with the enemies of the Constitution. Traitor!

He was unfortunately, I was stupid enough to vote for that POS. Trump had a rally in my hometown and Cassidy was all in with Trump prior to the election. I will never regret a vote as much as I’ve regretted that one.

Amazing how many of these traitors, that PDJT dragged across the line, have turned on him.

Almost like they are CCP paid.

>> He’ll be reelected again in 2026.

You know saying that doesn’t help.

Unfortunately, we have no margins for cynicism.

"But that opens the door to a Democrat."

Not much likely in a statewide office like Senator. John Bel Edwards got in by fake name recognition ("Edwards") and his rep as a Navy Seal...not a combination easy to duplicate.

Bill Cassidy was just reelected. He’ll be 69 years old in the next election. He doesn’t ever have to answer to the people again, so he can engage in treason at will. Cassidy is a disgusting and evil person.

I see that the Republican party for the entire state of Louisiana (not just the parish of East Baton Rouge) has censured Cassidy for his vote(s).

I gave Bel Edwards no chance in both statewide races and he won by comfortable margins. However, I do understand that Louisiana votes have different standards for their statewide officials than they do their federal officials. I just would not count Bel Edwards out, especially now that there is no reason at all to vote for Cassidy.

Since Trump was not convicted, he is allowed to run for a political office again.

Wrong.

There’s nothing in the Constitution that forbids anyone for running again even if they’ve been impeached and convicted.

As to removal by recall, the United States Constitution does not provide for nor authorize the recall of United States officers such as Senators, Representatives...

“Not providing” is not the same as restricting. There is no language in the Constitution preventing recall, so this determination is left to the States per the 10th Amendment.
