Road Trip: Patrick Space Force Base, Florida

FLpatrickafb2

Patrick Space Force Base is a United States Space Force installation located between Satellite Beach and Cocoa Beach, in Brevard County, Florida, in the United States. It was named in honor of Major General Mason Patrick, USAAC. It is home to the 45th Space Wing (45 SW). In addition to its "host wing" responsibilities at Patrick SFB, the 45 SW controls and operates Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS) and the Eastern Range.

The host wing for Patrick SFB is the 45th Space Wing (45 SW), whose Airmen manage all launches of uncrewed rockets at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS) 12 miles to the north.

These rockets include satellites for the US military, to include the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) and the National Security Agency (NSA), as well as scientific payload launches in support of NASA, weather satellite launches in support of NOAA, payloads in support of international customers such as the European Space Agency, and commercial payloads for various corporate communications entities.

Units and individuals from the 45 SW have deployed abroad during wartime, most notably during Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

The facility was due to be renamed Patrick Space Force Base in February or March 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The facility was finally renamed on December 9, 2020.

Additional tenant activities at Patrick SFB include the 920th Rescue Wing, the Air Force Technical Applications Center and the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI). Total employment is 10,400. There are 13,099 military, dependents, civilian employees and contractors on base.

The 45th Space Wing is one of two space launch wings for the U.S. Space Force, being responsible for executing military, intelligence, civil, and commercial space launches using the Eastern Range. Primary launch vehicles include the Atlas V, Delta IV, Delta IV Heavy, Pegasus, Minotaur, Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and Boeing X-37 rockets. It also supports U.S. Navy Trident II D5 ballistic missile tests and evaluation.

The 45th Space Wing is the host wing for Patrick Space Force Base and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, providing base support for NASA, the Air Force's Technical Applications Center and 920th Rescue Wing, and U.S. Navy's Naval Ordnance Test Unit.

Since it was 75 the other day, it’s hard to get into polar mode.

The day or two of cold we get here is no big deal, but this one is supposed to stick around for days.

YUCK!

Howdy, lauren! Great road trip tonight. Have visited Patrick many times when my son was stationed there. He loved it.

Howdy, radu!

Hope your day went well. Is it warmer? We have 70s for the next two days and then [after all my whining] the big plunge into the Deep Freeze for us. And for you, it looks like. Just glad I dont live any farther north!

Good grief! Where did that come from? Our weather forecast isn’t anywhere near that cold. It’ll be right nippy this weekend but not THAT nippy. They’re calling for lows in the teens.

It was pretty nice today. 54 degrees when I took Lake to the vet this afternoon. It would have been a pleasant drive if not for all the salt dust in the air. My eyes and sinuses are still burning from that.

It was from Mark at HurricaneTrack.com. He uses one of the weather platforms...NOAA I think. I was shocked. I’ve checked Weatherbug and the lowest they show is on Sunday...High of 22, low of 15. Which is quite a contrast to what we’re having this week. LOL!

Ugh. I’ll bet that salt dust was irritating! Almost like it’s crystallized.
