LEWISBURG - Bucknell University President John Bravman has taken the students to task for failing to adhere to coronavirus protocols.
He did so Thursday evening in an email to students announcing the university was immediately switching from in-person to remote instruction until further notice.
“While the majority of you have taken great care to comply with COVID-19 guidelines — for which we are all so grateful — student compliance is falling, as noted by students, faculty and staff,” he wrote.
He cited this email from a student:
“In the past week, I have noticed that my peers have had an attitude shift. Since we made it through the whole fall semester, some students think they are now invincible and stand no chance of going home … I am concerned because even when I take precautions and limit my exposure to the people I live with, I cannot control the actions of others.”
Another student wrote, he said:
“Many students appear to have a more relaxed attitude in comparison to last semester, especially with mask usage. … There is open dialogue among students surrounding the planning of larger downtown events.”
This is unacceptable, Bravman wrote. The goal of the email is not to threaten or blame but to inform and educate, he explained.
“As the result of poor individual choices, our campus is already at risk for not completing the semester in person,” he told students.
“Whether or not other schools are experiencing something similar does not matter. ‘Mask up or pack up’ has never been more important and will be enforced.
“In the face of this virus, we must try our best to control what is in our power to control. That’s the best we can do, and that’s all I’m asking.”
Bravman cited the spike in positive tests for COVID-19 this week, which was the start of the spring semester.
The dashboard Saturday listed 41 active cases on campus. It also showed 79 students tested positive before arriving back on campus and there have been 63 positive tests since then.
A significant portion of isolation and quarantine space already is occupied and could quickly reach capacity, Bravman said.
Failure to comply the COVID-19 protocol will result in swift conduct review and immediate consequences, he told students. He continued:
“While I recognize the temptation to watch the Super Bowl with friends this weekend, I remind you that students who do not follow our COVID-19 directives will be required to leave campus and finish the semester remotely.
“In fact, we have already sent students home for the remainder of the semester and will continue to do so as appropriate.”
Bravman advised students they will receive updates next week on instructional mobility for the week beginning Feb. 15.
In addition to switching to remote instruction, Bucknell has canceled all athletic events and banned visitors including family members from campus.
Students are encouraged to go for walks or exercise outdoors but in small groups and they may leave their rooms to pick up food or have it delivered. Masks are required everywhere on campus.
Bravman shared his email to students with faculty and staff asking them to continue to work from home if all possible.
Friday was the 175th anniversary of Bucknell’s founding as the University at Lewisburg.
The name was changed to honor William Bucknell, a charter member of the board of trustees, who in 1881 donated $50,000 to save the university from ruin.

Has Bucknell confused itself with the Federal Penitentiary in Lewisburg?
Pennsylvania Ping!

FReepmail me to be added to the list.
Don’t pay your kids’ tuition at that germaphobe school.
Stop payment on all checks.
Just a bunch of leftist control freaks. Why the hell anyone would pay good money to go to a place like Bucknell.
I guess the students at “liberal and progressive” Bucknell are learning what “liberal and progressive” really means.
COVID-19 is a top down agenda and it was regardless of who is President.
Mike Pence held the bag for President Trump with Dr. Birx sent around to control the states.
Now more direct from the top.
How many have been hospitalized and/or died? We should be striving for herd immunity within this population instead of choking it.
“Go sit in the corner, put this dunce cap on, and leave your credit card with me.”
The Prezzy needs to just shut the place down permanently.
My son did a college visit at Bucknell. We did the typical orientation session and tour. The first thing we noticed was that every single person that worked at Bucknell admissions would introduce themselves the same way.
Every single person would start with “Hi I’m Ted, from Pittsburgh, I go by he, him, and his.” Or “ hi I’m Mary from Philadelphia. I go by she, her, and hers.“
Of course it was instantly obvious that the orientation was planned to get liberal students there and reject conservative students. The funniest thing was that while on our tour, our guide started to talk to me and said “so where did your son go to school?”
I responded, “That’s my daughter.” He stopped talking to me after that.
It is all just liberal mumbo jumbo. They don’t really believe their comments, they just do it to show their slant. Just hypocrites.
Son ended up at a much better school - still liberal but there is an undercurrent of known conservatives’ kids there. And they’ve banded together.
Both my niece and nephew recently graduated from Bucknell, two years apart. My nephew came out a know-it-all leftist.
All the universities indoctrinate their students. It begins in kindergarten and gets increasingly intense.
I agree.
I own a house on the Bucknell Campus, have many family members who went there. It really has changed in the last 20 years.
Thinking of putting the house on the market soon and getting away from Bucknell.
