A Future with Forgiveness

Bible in a Year:

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Romans 12:21 In 1994, when South Africa made the transition from government by apartheid (imposed racial segregation) to a democracy, it faced the difficult question of how to address the crimes committed under apartheid. The country’s leaders couldn’t ignore the past, but merely imposing harsh punishments on the guilty risked deepening the country’s wounds. As Desmond Tutu, the first black Anglican Archbishop of South Africa, explained in his book No Future Without Forgiveness, “We could very well have had justice, retributive justice, and had a South Africa lying in ashes.”

Through establishing the Truth and Reconciliation Committee, the new democracy chose the difficult path of pursuing truth, justice, and mercy. Those guilty of crimes were offered a path to restoration—if they were willing to confess their crimes and seek to make restitution. Only by courageously facing the truth could the country begin to find healing.

In a way, South Africa’s dilemma mirrors the struggle we all face. We’re called to pursue both justice and mercy (Micah 6:8), but mercy is often misunderstood to be a lack of accountability, while pursuing justice can become distorted into pursuing revenge.

Our only path forward is a love that not only “hates what is evil” (Romans 12:9) but also longs for the transformation and good of our “neighbor” (13:10). Through the power of Christ’s Spirit, we can learn what it means to have a future of overcoming evil with good (12:21). Reflect & Pray

When have you witnessed times when the goal of mercy and grace seemed distorted to enable injustice? When have you seen both justice and mercy working in harmony?

Loving God, when the pain and injustice around me breaks my heart, help me to still believe in Your love and power to transform and heal. Help me to point with my life to Your justice, mercy, and love.

Hey there, Kathy.

Yes, the rain finally got here and just before it hit, the wind got REALLY bad. The power blipped hard three times and I decided to turn the computer off for a while. Hubby’s cable box is dead now but mine somehow survived.

It’s still windy now but it’s calmed down enough I can’t hear it any more. Before the rain, it sounded like a never-ending train was roaring by for a couple of hours. The cats didn’t like it one bit.

It’s been a gorgeous day up your way, even though it’s cold. The cam op zoomed in on Mt. Denali gleaming in the sunlight a couple of times.

Today will seem warm compared to what lies ahead for y’all. It’s gonna get c-c-c-c-cold!

Howdy, luvie.

I hope you had a good day.
I meant to ask you last night if you got any rain. It looked good on the radar for a little while but we know sometimes rain evaporates before it reaches the ground.

OMG! No trees can fall on the house, right? Stay safe!

No time to myself, but several hours of little things getting done, and then work til thread posting time. A satisfying day so far.

Hey radu!

Had a pretty good day. We got no rain. As usual. I think hubby said he saw a few sprinkles when out and about, there was nothing here at the house. But we sure got plenty of wind. Ugh!

How about you? Any rain there? Cold?

The beast has been hungry for six weeks...dinner bell is ringing!

This one is going to be long lasting....might require two plowing/blowing operations. Not my favorite.

Well darn. I’d hoped you’d taken a little time to do nothing for a little while but I guess things have piled up that needed to be done. I hope you accomplished enough to have some “you” time tomorrow.

No, there aren’t any trees close enough to this house to land on it if one falls. The other house is a different story and I worried about it when we lived there. Now the only worry is a tree coming down on the power line that runs across the front yard over there. The well pumps run off that line. No water if there’s no electricity for the pumps.

Since things are calm enough now, I can get the shower I was planning to take a little earlier.

Dang it. I was hoping y’all got some rain last night when I saw the radar. It’s happened to us plenty of times. Rain shows on the radar but it doesn’t make it to the ground.

Your wind has been here all day and it REALLY fired up around sunset. We could hear it roaring from in the house and it had the cats freaked out. The power blipped several times too. But as soon as it started raining, the wind calmed back down to what we had during the day and all’s well enough.

It wasn’t all that cold today but the wind chill was unpleasant. It’ll stay warm-ish overnight, then cool off tomorrow afternoon when the cold front comes through. By this time tomorrow night, anything falling from the sky will be frozen. This roller coaster ride isn’t fun.

Wow...your weather really is kind of volitile right now. I hope you don’t get the frozen stuff, but right now I’d take it over the very dry beginning to our year! I have a feeling it’s going to be another year of sneezing and watery eyes from allergies. Blech

Yes, it’s been a wild day here. We were under a wind advisory and it was justified. We’re catching the southern part of that monster system that’s ripping across the northern states. We won’t get much more than a dusting of snow tomorrow night/Monday morning.

I hope this doesn’t end up being as dry a year as last year was for you.

I'm tired of the wind already and it's just beginning. At least we didn't have THIS today. This is Lubbock...and my allergies were even wilder when we lived there. We took many a trip when I was a kid when you could barely see the road right in front of you. EEE!
