Incoming Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has suggested taxing Americans for the number of miles they drive, a policy he endorsed as a Democratic presidential candidate.
The Biden Administration is actively searching for ways to fund its ambitious $1 trillion infrastructure plan.
Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., acknowledged "privacy concerns" related to implementing a vehicle miles traveled (VMT) system but said it should be considered as a potential replacement for the gas tax.
During Buttigieg's confirmation hearing in the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee on Thursday, Florida Republican Sen. Rick Scott asked him if he would support increasing the federal gas tax, which is currently charged to drivers in addition to state gas taxes. The federal gas and diesel tax is the primary source of funding for the Federal Highway Trust Fund........

If they destroy the Oil and gas industry, there won’t be any ‘miles driven’.............................
So much for helping the middle class, this targets the middle and working classes and suburbanites.
A LOT of government types want to tax mileage, but it cannot work at the state level as folks would simply register their cars out of state. Also, it would be politically unpopular.
At very least the feds are needed to create an inescapable infrastructure for enforcement. The excuse will be electric cars.
And yes, any such tax will supplement, and not eliminate existing taxes.
Just another "buyer's remorse" liberal voters are going to experience again and again during this Administration.
Too late Little Pete, they already invented the Fuel Excise Tax. Dumbass, we are already taxed by the mile!!
Gas tax already doing this
Oil and gas, are the lifeblood of the economy.
Stop the flow of the blookd, and you kill the economy.
There is no logic in progressive thought.
This would play havoc with food prices. Rural America logs huge amounts of miles.
I suspect they will go with a mandated DOT yearly inspection like commercial vehicles already have. The system is in place, they would just expand it.
Joe’s $1 trillion infrastructure plan will never happen
I commented to one of my STUPID liberal acquaintances that he should be thrilled because now Mayor Pete gets bend him over. He didn’t see the humor in it.
What about businesses that transport goods. If they are included than watch for markets to raise prices, utility companies, everything.
At some point the overbearing regs become so burdensome that states and individual begin to ignore them. That is what helped in the demise of the Soviet Union.
Rural America votes red and thus deserves a penalty.
I think this would be in addition to the existing fuel excise tax so they can financially rape electric car owners who don’t consume fuel at the pump directly.
They just like taxes. Anywhere, anytime, any reason.
It’s all about ‘feelings’..................................
Oh, that will never happen. We'll have the mileage tax and an increase in sky-high gas taxes (which we already have in California).
As usual, it will hit the working class the hardest as they have the longest commutes.
If they voted for Biden, they have no one to blame but themselves.
