Babylon 5 and Lost actress Mira Furlan has died at the age of 65, her family and management have confirmed. Furlan played Minbari Ambassador Delenn in the 1990s sci-fi TV drama, Babylon 5, and Danielle Rousseau in the noughties mystery drama, Lost. Her family told the BBC the Croatian actress died on Wednesday due to complications with West Nile Virus. "It is with great sadness that I confirm the passing of Mira Furlan" the statement read. "She was a woman full of kindness, strength and compassion." It continued: "She died peacefully at her home in Los Angeles, surrounded by her family. "We will all continue to celebrate her life and legacy, and know she'll always be here with us." West Nile virus is spread by mosquitoes in many countries, but not in the UK, according to the NHS website.

I loved her character, she is really someone I would in a wife, strong but feminine, loyal, courageous and so on, I would argue she was one of the best female characters in a TV show ever.

Yup. Exactly. Unlike the SJW “strong female” cardboard-cutouts often pushed today, she played her role beautifully. She conveyed great strength thru quiet words. B5 all around was great in large part because of excellent casting, and she was one of the best in the series.

Ivanova is the best. “Somebody has to have some perspective here. One day, BOOM.”

It was Ianova who said bonehead and Lennier, Billy Mumy, who said “ none taken” after she had said “ no offense”. Great show.

Not just entertainment. 12% of the living members of the BB HoF have passed within the last year.

Yeah, I read something the other day that now that Jopedo is at the controls, CNN has taken their running “death total” box, (or whatever they called it), off the permanent placement on the screen.

Yes it was until they defeated the Shadows and then it just sort of petered out.

Certainly up.there with Ivanova crying after Marcus’ death... And then ruining the moment.

He just wanted a kind word, or a smile and all I ever gave him in two years was grief! It’s because I think I saw what I wanted. And I was afraid... Maybe, but maybe I should’ve tried just one more time. I could’ve done that for him. Now I can’t. At least I should have just boffed him once!

At first glimpse, B5 looked hokey. It didn’t take long watching to realize how in-depth the show was. Great acting from Mira and rest of the cast made that possible.

Most of that was because of the last minute decision to produce the fifth season.

The end of the Shadow War was supposed to occur during the middle of the fifth season, with the last half of the season dealing with the aftermath.

During production of the fourth season, it began to look as there might not be a fifth so JMS had to decide which plot threads had to be wrapped up in case it was the last. The decision to produce season five came too late, so he had to come up with additional episodes to complete the series. That’s why it is an uneven season with good and not as good episodes.

My solution: I just don’t watch.

Yes, season one is somewhat weak and episodic, until after watching later seasons you see how he was setting up the chessboard.

Most assumptions about the characters and races you would make based only on season one are wrong, very, very wrong...

My uncle worked on that show, along with the X-Files in canada. Most of the crew and writers hated Star Trek for some reason, and thought that ST was sh*t.

I thought the original intent was a five year series. To me the loss of Michael O’Hare was a huge break in the show’s narrative continuity. To me the Sheridan character played by Boxlietner and the background created for him was an huge ill fitting puzzle piece for the series.

Okay, I never watched Babylon 5 before so after reading all the praise here for the series, I guess I will have to binge watch the episodes. I see that it is on Amazon Prime.

The original intent was a 5 year series, but they weren’t auto green lit for 5 years. Renewal was an every year struggle and near the beginning of season 4 WB flat out said no they weren’t going to renew. So JMS started pulling story parts forward to get them told. Then literally while they were filming the last episode of the show (which is still the last episode) TNT stepped up and bought the show renewing for the 5th season.

All characters were setup with replacements just in case, Sinclair was always going to be dropped out for the Valen plot, it just wound up being earlier when O’Hare’s psychological problems got too intense and he had to drop out. So Sheridan was always coming, though some of the early beats were supposed to go to Sinclair.

Ah, Jeez. Even tho’ I know the person is not the character, I am heartbroken.

Bruce Boxleitner posted after hearing this news: “Yesterday, I was brought to my knees.” (The rest of his tribute is on Twitter.) They were great friends in the best sense of the word.

My favorite Delenn line of all? “He was a good man”. I hope I’ll deserve such a defense, someday (but not too soon on the past tense part!)

Prayers for Mira’s family and friends, especially Bruce B.
