Some Los Angeles residents should wear masks inside their own homes as COVID-19 cases climb at alarming rates, health officials said.

Los Angeles County Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer on Monday urged anyone who lives with someone more vulnerable to the virus to mask up at home, news station KABC reported.

Any day now they’ll be like the Brits, whose government has just announced that in the future, they may leave their homes within a restricted radius only one day a week. This, of course, after Boris Johnson was caught bicycling 7 miles from home.

Still trying to determine if Ferrer is male, female or “it”.

It depends.

If nobody is going out, no way to get the virus, so no mask.

If the "healthy" one is going out a lot, mask on that one.

If the "unhealthy", one is going out a lot, why bother at home? If they are going to get it, chances are it will happen while out.

Actually the idea is not off base, and in certain contexts it is way more important than wearing masks in public, and the data backs up that statement.

When do most Covid-19 infections occur? They occur (a) in close contact, (b) indoors, (c) with continued contact over some period of time. THAT is not at all like the random, in passing, casual contact when out shopping.

A large after-action contact tracing study looked at where a many thousand group of New Yorkers had obtained their Covid-19 infections. The largest percentage was at home. The second largest group was in healthcare/nursing care related facilities. Together that was more than 80% of the cases. The minority, 20% was scattered around many different venues.

So, based on data, where - in those cases in that study - would masks have been the most helpful? In the home, not while out doing daily chores in public, where contact is usually not close, not in close spaces, and not sustained over some period time.

Fine, lets just wear Hazmat suits all the time.

If masks are so effective then why have cases gone up everywhere there has been a mask mandate?

Once again go back to the data from the Diamond Princess cruise ship last Feb.. People sharing the same cabin, one got it, one did not. 50% of the population have a cross immunity to the virus. It is also spread by Fecal-Oral, especially in Hospitals and Nursing Homes.

Flaw in your logic. If ‘random, in passing, casual contacts when out shopping’ do not result in infections, how would those involved in those ‘casual contacts’ become infected to bring the virus home?

Actually the advice does make sense. It would also make sense during a very active flu season. If you are out and about a lot and it is possible you have been exposed to the virus you should take steps to protect those people in your household who are high risk. That includes wearing a proper mask if you are in close contact with them.

County Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer is not a DOCTOR.
She is a social worker with a near $500,000 salary plus bonus.

If the politicians and essential actors and tv hosts do not wear a mask then why should anyone else.

I don’t know why you assume it was in casual contact from which they got the infection that they brought home.

It could have been at work or in some other setting with close contact and close contact over some sustained period of time. But, according to the data it was then in the home that was the great multiplier.

We had it one of our relatives families. Mother or father got it thru work most likely - she a healthcare worker, he running a small general minimart kind of store - but as soon as one had it, the other adult and the two kids followed right after that, in spite of the 1st adult attempting to self-isolate in one of the bedrooms; from one case to four, in the home, through contact in the home. That is consistent with the data collected in the largest contact tracing study anyone has done. Home contact was the single largest 1st source.
