Video with LOTS of wisdom.
years ago my father bought a boat in Canada, and decided to sail it back to Texas. On the journey back, he stopped in Californa at one point.
The state of California has been hounding him ever since ! they want him to pay sales tax to THEM!
I mean.. WHAT THE ABSOLUTE HECK!!!
LOL, once upon a time I would have doubted that story. Now I just go “Yeah, that tracks.”
It’s difficult to take enough of the top for yourself and give away to your support groups if you don’t confiscate it first.
Be prepared for some serious raises in taxes.
nomad isn’t even a US citizen anymore. He fled years ago.
Military folks should already know this - Kalifornia has been the worst by NY is similar - if you were ever stationed in some states but never return and retire in another state, (many of which do not tax retirement income) the bad states will claim tax on a portion of your retirement based on how long you were stationed there.
We moved to California to get away from Chicago weather.
In short 10 days after living in CA, I received a letter from CA saying I had not paid state income tax!
So there was high state income tax, high property tax (Melo Roose additional tax on my new house), high sales tax, high auto registration tax, high yearly cost to renew auto stickers, high tax on utilities.
We lasted in CA barely 1 year and escaped to Clark county in WA state which was a reliable red county at that time.
Shhhhh do not tell state of CA I lived there for one year.
Luckily I had already retired and did not earn any income in wages but did receive investment income from stocks and bonds.
Not new.
Back in the 80’s, if you served a 4-yr military assignment in California, then when you retired after 20-yrs, they tried to go after your retired military for 20% of your retirement because you “worked” in California for 20% of your career.
Vet groups joined together and protested at the federal level and California lost but it still it took several years before they stopped going after ex-military.
Yup. . .my Post 9 addresses military retirement.
Was told by a tax attorney/CPA that only New York and California have full-time revenue agents working in IRS HQ, DC.
Gawd. . .
California is rough. My company maintains records of where they send us on trips and if it adds up to more than 30 days within a year we end up getting whacked with state income tax from certain states. Then you need an accountant to sort it out at tax time when you end up with three of four W2s. I hate these petty ante rules. It complicates things and probably doesn’t make any money as they siphon money away from visiting business people but having to refund money from residents who end up having money siphoned from them when they visit places like NYC.
It is such a shame what California has become.
I visited a number of times in the 1990s and thought it was beautiful with great weather all year round. For years I had hoped to move there but those plans never came to be.
A real loss.
It is most likely unconstitutional since our magnificent constitution allows us freedom of movement.
“Want Lower Taxes? Don’t Even VISIT California”
No worries there. I don’t go to commie states.
Other peoples money is getting harder and harder to come by because of DJT.
Visit Massachusetts, instead! /s
It was once a Republican state, what tipped it was the influx of illegals and mostly east costers that visited west and stayed in the 1980s.
So if you bought a car in another state and visited friends in CA and left after a day or two they’ll want you to pay sales tax on it?
I left there in 1973, and established residency elsewhere as soon as I got to my first duty station. Considered returning when I was getting ready to retire from the USAF in 1997, talked to several family members, and heard a new-to-me joke: What to you call a guy who makes $50K a year in Los Angeles? Homeless.
Stayed in Oklahoma. Cost of living is much less here. Just retired over the Covid-19 thing, making $43K/year and it’s enough to live on here. I couldn’t even afford a refrigerator box in an alley where I used to live.
