Gov. Mike DeWine on Monday signed a controversial “stand your ground” bill that would eliminate Ohio’s “duty to retreat” before using force in self-defense.
Senate Bill 175, fast-tracked through the Ohio General Assembly last month by DeWine’s fellow Republicans, will make Ohio the 36th state to no longer require people to retreat before they can justifiably hurt or kill someone in self-defense.
The governor had previously hinted that he would veto SB175, saying he first wanted lawmakers to pass his package of gun reforms that they sat on for more than a year. But in a release sent Monday afternoon, the governor stated that the measure removes an “ambiguity in Ohio’s self-defense law.”
“I have always believed that it is vital that law-abiding citizens have the right to legally protect themselves when confronted with a life-threatening situation,” DeWine said in a statement. The governor added that he signed the bill in a “spirit of cooperation” with the newly seated 134th Ohio General Assembly.
Until now, under Ohio law, people have been justified in using deadly force in self-defense so long as they aren’t the aggressor, believe they are in imminent danger of death or great bodily harm, and are in their home or vehicle. The new law, which takes effect in 90 days, removes the “home or vehicle” requirement, and instead states that the defendant need only be in a place where they lawfully have the right to be....

His poll numbers must be bad.

Well... if that’s what it takes to get him to do the right thing. Props to OHIO!
Trump won big in Ohio.
It’s come a long way since I departed during the era of Howie Metzenbaum.
DeWine runs around to the head of the parade?
Too bad he doesn’t lock AntiFa/BLM down.
“Duty to Retreat” is such pathetic institutional cowardice. They are trying to implement this in Texas now (no real risk of it happening).
I have no idea why it would make sense for the good guy to
have to run like a scalded dog, before he could defend his
family. Good on DeWine.
RINO DewIne signed this? Wow. He must have a thousand messages from MAGA maniacs screaming at him everyday..

Could be that the people who pass “duty to retreat” laws are criminals themselves and are just extending a professional courtesy to their counterparts in the private sector. Just a guess.
But Democrats, along with some Senate Republicans, have sharply criticized the bill, saying (among other things) that it would result in more violence and death — particularly against minorities.
Sorry, I do not follow this line of thinking. It will protect minorities exactly the same as non-minorities
Unless these people are implying that minorities are more likely to be criminals, but then that would be racist.
Ohio and Florida are now red states.
Makes you wonder.
Mikey finally done good.
They are.
Due to his insane covid mandates, he’ll never hold public office in Ohio again.
What? Duty to haul ass goes away in Ohio? My, my.
Unfortunately, unless the President can pull something off, this is meaningless. Sadly
Half assed gesture by a Never Trump Republican. Too little too late.
If Harris gets into the White House, regardless of what happens in Georgia tomorrow and it isnt looking good since the legislature has done nothing to address the fraud process or the illegal consent decree that makes it run, there won’t be anymore Republican Governors. Or any other high level politicians.
The fraud will be embedded and they’ll be enough new citizens from Mexico and Central/South America that Republicans will vanish from the political landscape. Shitty truth, but the truth nonetheless.
Buckeye Firearms Association did some heavy lifting on this. If you’re in Ohio, subscribe to their email notifications. https://www.buckeyefirearms.org/
Too little, too late. He promised to sign Constitutional Carry, but then reneged, which is why the main firearms reform bills died at the end of the 2020 session.
I don’t see how it’s controversial.
Yeah I was about to say the same thing. I am going to start using the word “controversial” in front of things I don’t like, just like the MSM always does. For example, the controversial Joe Biden victory.
