NASHVILLE (AP) — An explosion linked to a vehicle rocked downtown Nashville on Christmas morning, sending shattered glass and debris over a wide area and rocking nearby buildings.
The Metro Nashville Police Department said via Twitter that the explosion occurred at 6:30 a.m. Friday and that state and federal authorities were on the scene, as were emergency crews including the fire department.

Restaurants nearby...some have been there for decades. This is mostly an entertainment zone. Some people live in the upper levels of these historic buildings and they’ve all been evacuated. Almost all of the buildings on this stretch are over 100 years old.
Reported all over now that the RV with the bomb played a warning to evacuate over loudspeakers, and then a 15 minute countdown until the explosion. Seems like an attempt to minimize casualties. Very strange, unclear what motivation was.

Funniest line I saw in one of the articles noted that the police considered an RV with loudspeakers blaring that it contained at bomb that would explode “to be suspicious.”
Photos and video from the area show the narrow 2nd Street corridor—which normally sees a high volume to pedestrian and tourist traffic—with scorched storefronts, burned trees, and blown out windows. The block running from Broadway to Commerce St. on 2nd Ave. is home to The George Jones Museum, The Wildhorse Saloon owned by Ryman Hospitality (The Grand Ole Opry, Ryman Auditorium), BB King’s Blues Club, Coyote Ugly, Benchmark, Big Shotz, and Leon’s Candy store, among other businesses.
No word on the severity of damage at these businesses at this time, though many of the establishments are in historic brick buildings that appear to have withstood the explosion.
