Road Trip: United States Coast Guard Yard, Maryland

MDcoastguardyard6

The United States Coast Guard Yard or just Coast Guard Yard is a United States Coast Guard operated shipyard located on Curtis Bay in northern Anne Arundel County, Maryland, just south of the Baltimore city limits.

It is the largest industrial facility in the Department of Homeland Security. It falls under the Coast Guard's Engineering and Logistics Command. It is the Coast Guard's sole shipbuilding and major repair facility, and part of the Coast Guard's core industrial base and fleet support operations.

The Yard has designed, built, maintained and renovated Coast Guard, Navy, Army, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), state and local government, and foreign military vessels and systems for nearly 120 years.

In addition to the Yard’s role as a shipyard, at various points in history the Yard served as home to the Coast Guard Academy, a recruit training center, a technical training center, and the Coast Guard’s r esearch and development center. The Yard has assumed many roles, and continuously evolved with time to best suit the needs of the U.S. Coast Guard.

MDcoastguardyard4

The functions of the Yard’s tenant commands include warehousing, administrative, foreign military sales, front-line operations, command and control, contingency response, and logistics activities.

The Yard’s tenants include the Surface Forces Logistics Center (SFLC), Sector Maryland National Capital Region, Asset Project Office Cutter Transition Division, Station Curtis Bay, Aids to Navigation Team Curtis Bay, PRO Baltimore, C3CEN Electronic Repair Facility, Electronics Support DetachmentBaltimore, and several other tenants.

MDcoastguardyard2

The Yard hosts the largest Inventory Control Point (warehousing operation) in the Department of Homeland Security, which serves the entire Coast Guard surface fleet, as well as the Coast Guard’s only U.S. Navy-certified heavy weapons overhaul facility.

In addition to permanent tenant activities, the Yard hosts an average of 8 visiting Coast Guard Cutters and other government agency vessels (along with their crews) at any time, and supports the renovation and transfer of vessels and weapons systems for foreign military sale. Thus, on average, the Yard hosts approximately a thousand visiting cutter crew members, other government agency crews, and foreign military crews per year.

Having been in the submarine service it was rare to meet any Coast Guardsmen but when we did we would tease them that, "We had always heard that one had to be at least six feet tall to get into the Coast Guard so that if one's ship sinks then one could simply walk back to shore!"

Only 2 good things about living in Maryland....

1. Being able to volunteer at Walter Reed.

2. Going to the air show at Andrews.

Curling Up with the Good Book

Bible in a Year:

All Scripture is God-breathed.

2 Timothy 3:16

The small country of Iceland is a nation of readers. In fact, it’s reported that each year this nation publishes and reads more books per person than any other country. On Christmas Eve, it’s a tradition for Icelanders to give books to family and friends and then read long into the night. This tradition dates back to World War II, when imports were restricted but paper was cheap. Icelandic publishers began flooding the market with new titles in late fall. Now a catalog of the country’s new releases is sent to every Icelandic home in mid-November. This tradition is known as the Christmas Book Flood.

We can be thankful God blessed so many with the ability to craft a good story and to educate, inspire, or motivate others through their words. There’s nothing like a good book! The best-selling book of all, the Bible, was composed by many authors who wrote in poetry and prose—some great stories, some not so—but all of it inspired. As the apostle Paul reminded Timothy, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” and equipping God’s people “for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16–17). Reading the Bible convicts, inspires, and helps us to live for Him—and guides us into the truth (2:15).

In our reading, let’s not forget to find time to curl up with the greatest book of all, the Bible.

Reflect & Pray

What have you read lately that helped you learn more about or draw closer to God? What helps you to spend time in Scripture?

God, thank You for inspiring creativity in the authors of “many books.” I’m especially thankful for Your Book.
