John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono on Tuesday marked the 40th anniversary of the legendary musician's shock murder with a call for gun control.
"The death of a loved one is a hollowing experience," tweeted the 87-year-old artist, who still lives in the Dakota building in Manhattan outside of which her husband was shot four decades ago.
"After 40 years, Sean, Julian and I still miss him. 'Imagine all the people living life in peace,'" she wrote, quoting the 1971 song she co-wrote with Lennon that became the best-selling single of his solo career.
Ono, who witnessed her husband's murder at close range, also tweeted an image of the former Beatle's shattered and bloodied spectacles, which included the words: "Over 1,436,000 people have been killed by guns in the U.S.A. since John Lennon was shot and killed on December 8, 1980."
At 40 years old, Lennon had returned to songwriting shortly before his death, having taken a five-year hiatus to raise his young son Sean.
The couple was returning home to New York's famous Dakota building across from Central Park, when disgruntled Beatles fan Mark David Chapman shot Lennon dead.
"Tell me it isn't true!" Ono cried in horror.
After Lennon's murder, Ono committed to preserve his memory, funding the construction of the Strawberry Fields memorial in New York that's become a point of pilgrimage for fans and mourners across the globe.
By mid-morning Tuesday, a shrine featuring flowers, photos and a small holiday tree had already cropped up on the "Imagine" mosaic that anchors the memorial in Central Park.
In her tweet commemorating Lennon's death, Ono included a number of hashtags including #guncontrol now and #end gun violence.

“MDC bought the handgun legally but broke NY law in this crime.”
As I understand it, it is illegal for anyone to possess an unregistered handgun in the state of NY. One has to get the state’s permission to have one. If you move to NY you have to leave any handguns behind, since you can’t get a handgun ‘permit’ until you are a resident.
Oddly, in most states there are no ‘registrations’ of handguns. Anyone who can legally possess one can have one.

Forty years ago NYC still had the toughest gun control in the USA. Didn’t work then, won’t work now.
Thank you..., what you wrote was what was written in the article to which I linked.
I’m sorry for your loss, Yoko. I truly am. But the answer is a resounding NO!
What you are suggesting won’t result in what you want.
It will make things much worse.
In an effort to persuade everyone to stay inside, Yoko Ono has scheduled a series of outdoor concerts throughout Manhattan.
LOL, people will put their masks over their ears, instead of over their mouth and nose.
Amazingly, my computer would not allow me to hear that. I had to end up rebooting my entire audiovisual system and attached PC to hear it. Almost as if it were trying to protect me against my will.
Holy Mother of God.
Look at the faces of the people watching. That tells you all you need to know.
Looks like more than a few rules of the “45 Declared Goals” of the Communist Takeover of the USA were involved in this one session:
22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to “eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms.”
23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. “Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art.”
24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them “censorship” and a violation of free speech and free press.
25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.
I am having a hard time deciding whether Goal 22 was the main focus here, or if it was a combination of Goals 23, 24, and 25.
Turn me on, dead man. lol
I watched the movie many years ago. What’s MDC supposed to signify?
Her political views are rivaled only by her musical talent.
I few years ago, the car in front of me had a license plate frame that said, “Still Pissed at Yoko!”. LOL. I almost spilled my beer.
How about had the famously cheap and acquisitive pair have hired armed bodyguards for 24/7 protection?
I remember watching Joe Bob Briggs do a review of Yoko’s short film called The Fly. The review was hilarious.
Wasn’t it Andrew Dice Clay who famously said, “If Chapman had just aimed a little to the left, today he’d be a hero.”
