In the latest episode of corporate wokeness fixing a problem that doesn’t actually exist, the Major League Baseball team the Cleveland Indians is changing its name after having used the moniker for 105 years.
This follows the decision by the Washington Redskins of the National Football League to change their name this season. Whatever you think of that decision by what is now the Washington Football Team, it is plainly obvious that these two cases are nothing alike.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but the term “Indian” to indicate a Native American is not even remotely racist. Just to cite just one example, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian is named what it is named precisely because American Indian is the term preferred by many Native Americans. Should the museum also change its allegedly offensive name? Of course not.
The closest thing to a sensible argument about why we should not use the term “Indian” to describe Native Americans is that it is rooted in a mistake made by Christopher Columbus, who as we all know by now was a horrible racist whose name should never be uttered. But so what? That was 500 years ago. And in the time since, the American Indian, though in many cases badly mistreated by the United States government, also became a central part of American history and legend. That is what we really risk losing in this damnation of history.

are the sissy liberals gonna outlaw the “tomahawk” chop at Braves and FSU games?
How about the drumbeat dude in center field at all “cleveland baseball team” games? he is an institution there.
...smh......liberalism is a mental disorder
May they be known as the Cleveland Panderers.
...or simply change
to...
Cleveland logo changed out for a dot head Indian in a sari.
They should change their name to the Cleveland Cowards. Has a good ring to it and is highly descriptive.
Wonder what Bill Veeck would say.
ROFL....
I wonder what Jim Thorpe would have to say about all this????
Liberals....Everything they touch turns to sh*t.
or Ricky Vaughn..
Sad. I’ve been an Indians fan since 1954, off and on. Occasionally went to see a game. Only on recent opening days would you see a “protest” outside the stadium, usually about ten people, two or three (self-designated so who knows) Indians and maybe 6 or 7 white liberal females from the UCC headquarters up the street. Real Indians were virtually unanimous in their acceptance and even approval of the nickname. This is a pure money play by cowardly owners who are typical of the craven class dominating all the pro sports franchises these days. Nobody in this squalid scene really gives a dam about the Indians’ “sensitivities,” Owners, Players, protesters included.
It doesn’t. The owner of the Indians wants to do this so he can be cool, hanging with his billionaire friends, showing how virtuous he is. They will all be wowed that he’s that woke, that he’s willing to discard team history for the cause.
Meanwhile, Indians gear, including Chief Wahoo will be for sale after the name change. Virtue, but not enough virtue to ignore some revenue.
Dolan is free to change the name. I’m free to ignore them, and not buy any gear for the Cleveland Baseball Team.
Oh, and for those who don’t know, The Cleveland Indians got their name in honor of Lewis Sockalexis, Penobscot Indian from Maine, who played for them in their early days. So the owners are dishonoring the first known Native American pro baseball player.
I'm glad the Cubbies beat them.
I remember when I was a kid living up there if you got straight As on your report card the newspaper would give you a whole bunch of free Indians game tickets.
You had your pick of seats because there typically were about 3000 people in the 70,000 seat Muni Stadium.
“This is nothing but virtue signaling by a bunch of defective, meaningless white liberals.”
Agreed. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if they changed the name to the Cleveland Redskins?
Wait until the PETA folks start complaining....
“Yep. More white folks getting rid of Indians.”
When Land O’Lakes erased the Indian maiden from their logo, someone said,
“Ain’t that just like a white man - get rid of the Indian, keep the land!”
I once asked a Hindu what they call North American Indians.
“Red Indians”, was the reply.
Shame on them!
Shame on those bigoted owners!
