Minneapolis City Council unanimously approved a controversial budget which is set to move $8million of funding from the police department to violence prevention, mental health services and other programs.

Mayor Jacob Frey, who had threatened to veto the entire budget if the council went ahead with a plan to cap police staffing, said the vote was a defining moment for the city which was the first to be hit by anti-police protests following the death of George Floyd.

But the city has been plagued by soaring violent crime in the city has soared - with homicide, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft and arson all up on last year's figures.

The Minneapolis city council has already announced police department "cuts" to hide the truth that they can't hire new officers to replace their retirees and departees, at least not at the regular rates they're willing to pay.

If the city bureaucrats were to raise incentives for new hires, they would have to raise the rates for their current officers but they cannot afford either. It's much easier for to remove unfilled positions, both current and future, than admit the City of Minneapolis can't hire new law enforcement due to their failure to back their own officers after Mr. George Floyd died of a drug overdose by his own hand.
