The sight of hurried business types carrying boxed salad was typical of San Francisco’s downtown lunch rush before March. But as the business crowd remains at home, that once familiar scene has since been replaced with emptied streets and dimmed storefronts.
Ever since the pandemic wrought havoc on restaurants and bars around the Financial District and South of Market, Adam Mesnick says his sandwich shop, Deli Board, has become something of a destination for customers who happen to be in the neighborhood for coffee or walking to an appointment.
“It's decimated down here. I mean, the whole time, you're sort of watching this crumble happen,” Mesnick said about the current state of business around SoMa and the FiDi districts.
To describe these former bustling neighborhoods as “decimated” wouldn't be a far stretch either. Based on credit card usage data gathered by Mastercard and shared with San Francisco's Chamber of Commerce, about 293 of 344 (or 85%) of bars and restaurants are presumed closed.
“I think the fundamental scary thing for downtown, SoMa and to some by the Moscone Center is just the lack of business customers and the day-to-day people who are the bread and butter of the cafes and places that haven't even reopened,” said Laurie Thomas, the executive director of the Golden Gate Restaurant Association. “So much of these downtown restaurants, and certainly the ones by Moscone Center, are really dependent on business travel. I think we're going to need the vaccine before the state's going to let us have conventions.”

Ever since the Democrats wrought havoc on restaurants and bars around the Financial District and South of Market...
Fixed it
Soon they will rise up demanding taxpayer bailouts, restitution and government support. Destroy the economy then step in with socialism.
To describe these former bustling neighborhoods as “decimated” wouldn’t be a far stretch either. Based on credit card usage data gathered by Mastercard and shared with San Francisco’s Chamber of Commerce, about 293 of 344 (or 85%) of bars and restaurants are presumed closed.
They want these businesses closed; it is a two-pronged assault on the middle class, destroying their livelihoods while getting American consumers accustomed to the idea that the things they used to buy in these places will no longer be available - they’ll have to make it themselves. Further erosion of the Western standard of living...
America benefits from the death of cities, San Francisco, L.A., Portland, Seattle, New York.
All are centers of leftwing socialist anti Americans. The death of these cities is not only good but completely necessary for the survival of America.
I was going to post that 85% is closer to “annihilated” than it is to “decimated”.
cheap real estate for the chinese, and the great reset low interest loans and grants will be given to minorities to reopen an equal and just society
That’s what you get for electing liberals. Don’t complain if you voted left.

We all have American dreams.
Most of these small business will not (can not) open with the same owners.
Few people have the resources to stay in business if they don’t have any income for just a few weeks, let alone 8 months.
The original owners will not have the capital required to start up again.
It is not just the business owners, it is their employees as well as their suppliers that face bankruptcy, all for virus that is no deadlier then the flu that we live through yearly.
All for political reasons. Looking back it is clear now they wanted the lock down so they could push mail in voting, and with no verification on the mail in ballots it was easy to steal the election.
It’s the goal of Democrats to ruin Trump’s good economy - not caring who suffers - so Biden and the Democrats can come to the rescue. Sorry, it’s not gong to work.
Hey Adam,
Who did you vote for?

Most people won’t know just how bad it is until the lockdowns end and they return to a ghost town, regarding service/retail businesses.
Thanks for clarifying those silly hipster acronyms. All started in NYC with SOHO, south of Houston.
Some writer did a spoof of SOHO, NoBlo, North of Bloomingdales (not exactly that, but close)
That’s what decimated meant to a Latin centurion two thousand years ago. Sixty percent of English vocabulary comes from Latin. One of the great things about the English language is it takes words from other languages, adopts them, and changes the meaning over time, sometimes subtly and sometimes not. The same thing happens even to words already used in English. So the words font, logo, pontificate and many others no longer mean the same as they once did.
Decimate now means “kill, destroy, or remove a large percentage or part of” in addition to its original definition of “reduce by one tenth.” There’s a reason that Latin is a dead language and English is not.
Chessboard...pawns, rooks, bishops, knights, queen, POTUS. New game for Christmas?
