A lot of people (though not all) who adopt sheler animals are virtue signalers. If someone wants a shelter dog, that's fine. If someone wants a specific breed from a responsible breeder, that should be fine as well. My wife and I are on our third Pembroke Corgi.
California, Georgia, Hawaii, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, and
Virginia are the only states that explicitly outlawed dog meat. It is,
however, illegal in all states for slaughterhouses to handle dogs, and
it’s illegal for stores to sell the meat. This doesn’t prevent an individual
from killing and eating a dog or selling meat to another person, so long
as it’s not through a store. The laws among the states that have banned
the consumption of dog meat vary, and some states allow citizens to
kill and eat dogs so long as the killing is done “humanely”.

Here in Colorado, the majority of shelter dogs are rejects from other places, like pit bulls and barking dogs with bad attitudes.
We’ve tried to go to the shelter for a dog. We adopted once and had to return him. It was vicious. You also won’t find pure breeds like Basenjis and Golden Retrievers at a shelter. The pure breed rescues often are not a great source either.
We have adopted cats from the shelter. Both of ours that we now are great pets from the local shelter. Cats are definitely one animals where a shelter is a great source.
I think your problem is with Mel.
However, dogs can most definitely be eaten. We are stewards of all animals and pet status is not important.
My German shepherd rescue is having a great year also. Despite not having adoption events from March through October and now only on a limited basis they are on a record 400+ dogs being adopted. The average has been 330 German shepherds.
I have had a puppy mill rescue, an animal shelter pup, and a pure bred Golden Retriever. All three great dogs.
You sound like a liberal. “It’s for the shelter pups!”
The shelter/rescue dog adoption stuff is a racket these days. A lot of them are imported. But it goes on because people love to virtue signal like you just did.
PS - Yes I was a shelter volunteer.
Please beware that some of these rescue groups are a scam. They charge exorbitant prices and deposits. Just do your homework when dealing with them. It would one thing if they could show you the actual vet bills but they won’t. They just charge a blanket fee.
Also some of them just go down to the local animal shelter and adopt them cheap than turn around and charge you more.
My boss was trying to adopt a rescued Chinese butcher dog and they wanted $850 plus a 32 page home report. When she answered that she had seasonal allergies they kicked her application out. So she called and talked to an administrator and they said if she gave a $2,000 refundable deposit + the $850 she could have the dog. The huge deposit was in case she had an allergic reaction and had to give the dog back to them. I so I asked her would that make the dog free for the next owner. Of course not, they would charge another $850.
She had been donating to them on monthly basis and after this she promptly cancelled her donation.
I actually got turned into the County by one of these groups for running an “illegal” kennel (6 or more dogs). They wanted my well cared for dogs, all of which are spayed or neutered and have regular health checkups, so that they could turn a profit.
I am looking for a bernese. one on the smaller end of spectrum. 50 to 80lbs
Cats are seasonal animals, they breed constantly in the summer. I’ve adopted many shelter cats mostly because I hate that so many have to be euthanized. Still some day I want to own a big Bengal cat.
We had a Pixie-Bob once, back in 1996, from Carol Brewer. Named him Hobbs. Great cat. Questionable breed, but an interesting cat.
Sadly that was a thought.
I've notice pretty much the same thing in my area.. Mostly those big, mean dogs that drug dealers keep..
You’re correct. The real reason people say stuff like “don’t breed” is because they hate people or dogs.
What’s the name of that GS rescue?
I’ve 3 purebred cats. Two Siamese and an Abbysinian (sp?). The Abby was sweet and dumb. The Siamese were smart and vocal. One of them lived to be 20 years old.
My thought, too. My wife will order nothing but shrimp at a chinese place. She sez nobody can make a dog or cat look like shrimp. After 3 years in Japan I figure I prolly had both at one time or another. No sweat!
It’s only nice if they went to a good home for good reasons.
There’s some sick F’s out there.
Biden should adopt one (a drug lord’s dog) then when it rips his throat out the dog will be declared a “Hero of the People’s Democratic Republic”.
