She sez nobody can make a dog or cat look like shrimp.

A few years ago, there was a story on NPR (I know)...about mis-labeled items on menus in order to drive the prices up.

they did a test with a control group where pig bung was taken and fried up and a separate plate of actual calimari was fried up

people couldn't tell the difference

My takeaway? when you order calimari, make sure you see tentacles

Try finding a good shelter pet in some areas. There are no small dogs that are good with kids for more than 100 miles from our area. The only dogs left are pit bulls, pit bull mixes, or dogs with major issues.

The spay and neuter program has been so successful, that pretty soon only people who can afford $2,000 puppies will have dogs. Even the breeders around here have waiting lists for puppies months in advance of the puppies’ births.

I hope the shelters are screening folks like they do here. They wouldn’t sell a cat to my elderly MIL as they were worried about the cat’s care. (MIL’s elderly cat had just died). She got one from a private party.

But I’m guessing lots of folks by a pet just because they are lonely and shut in, but not aware of what it takes to raise a pet. Especially a dog which is a lot more work than a cat IMHO.

What’s the name of that GS rescue?

German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County (CA)

I’m a total sap for pups. Have 4, 2 bought, 1 local and 1 from breeder and 2 rescues, real rescues. Doxie tossed to side of road and red heeler mix pregnant and abandoned by owner moving and couldn’t take her.
They’re all my family and wouldn’t give any of them up for nothing. 40% of my shopping budget is theirs.

I’m a sap for dogs, too. I have two rescues, I adore them and would do anything for them. Like you, they do take up a big chunk of my shopping budget, but I consider it money well spent. Dogs are wonderful creatures.

Bernese are great but hard to get usually and expensive. Our female that we had was 70 lbs, about as small and trim as possible. They also have health issues.

I would highly recommend looking at a Great Bernese. They have far less, if any, health issues, are more available, and cost far less. A Bernese is about $3,500 any more and a Great Bernese is $800.

Yeas ago I lived in Fountain Valley, there was an article in the OC Register about animal control in the nearby city of Westminster, CA

The article was about layoffs of animal control workers. I got quite a laugh out of one part of the story, which I am sure they did not intend for it to sound as it did:

'With the increasing influx, in recent years, of Vietnamese immigrants the work load for Animal Control officers has been greatly reduced'

That is a paraphrase, of course, as it has been too many years.

The Amish treat dogs worse than livestock and breed them recklessly. There are a lot of Amish dog breeders in the Lancaster area of PA.

It’s a good money maker and many people are fooled by the fake sellers. One of my wife’s nephews, a young scoundrel, is involved in “dogwashing” in Missouri.

I lived on an island with feral cats. I adopted a gray and white and named him Phil. Great cat. Protected all the others.

Cats are seasonal animals, they breed constantly in the summer.

A yellow tabby living under the deck across the street has had two litters this summer. First litter 3 kittens and this September litter 4 kittens..............Add that to the three she had last summer......
