As several coronavirus vaccines inch closer toward FDA approval, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert has called on the public to double down on public health measures. Dr. Anthony Fauci, in a virtual discussion with The Hastings Center on Thursday, said the eventual vaccine is meant to protect the individual from getting sick from the coronavirus, but may not prevent that person from spreading the virus to others.

If this was true, then herd immunity would never work. But it does work. Always has.

The number may need to be a little higher, but I totally agree with the sentiment. Nobody’s going to bother with any of these requirements once safe and effective vaccines are widely deployed. Continuing restrictions once the disease is being wiped out is pretty silly.

If you don’t become sick, how do you spread it? How can you spread a virus you don’t have?

And that is a big part of my objection to much of these restrictions. What percentage of cases come from asymptomatic people? Many folks quote 30-50%. That number came from an early Chinese study meant to absolve them from blame. Even the WHO admits two very high quality studies indicate the number is 0.5%. 1 in 200! And for that, a hundred million people need to wear masks everywhere and shut down all business?
