IMPORTANT UPDATE: starting tomorrow, all @NYCschools buildings are CLOSED for in-person learning until further notice. All students who were learning in school buildings part of the week will transition to remote learning every day. Visit http://schools.nyc.gov/coronavirus for more.
Good. Less time for the kids to spend in the classroom being taught that they are all racists.
Close all of the government indoctrination camps labeled public schools for good.
I saw a report that NYC real estate prices were down 50%.
But now can’t find the story online. Was a Forbes article. Guess someone got their marching orders to shut up.
Very sad news for those families. It’s such a scramble for families of elem kids to find child care when schools are closed.
And there are worrisome, data driven worldwide declines in educational achievement as well as mental effects from all this isolation of students. 100% remote isn’t working.
Europe and many states prioritize in person education. Blue states don’t seem to, in general.
And many international studies are showing no or very little covid spread in schools.
the utter collapse of NYC could be the result of de blasio’s epic incompetence. that would be interesting to see.
Basically kids got zero education this year and lots of personal problems.
.... And many international studies are showing no or very little covid spread in schools.
*******
And of the small number of cases, how many were serious?
I know in California, of 40 million residents, only two deaths have been for children/teens under 18.
Escape from NYC
If I were a teacher, there’s no way I would allow myself to be locked in a closed, poorly ventilated space with a bunch of ignorant ghetto dwellers.
I’d fight it until I got fired.
” It’s such a scramble for families of elem kids to find child care when schools are closed.”
Schools are not free daycare.
Figure it out.
Use the same method that you use every summer.
So what are you gonna do about, parents?
Enjoy the suck.
Actually, schools HAVE been considered and used for free day care (as well as education) for generations now, enabling mothers to join the workforce.
Trump signed an executive order a few months ago stating that teachers are essential workers—there are two reasons why keeping public schools open is in the national interest: 1) the United States needs an educated military, and 2) parents need to be able to report to the front lines of factories and other industries that don’t involve work that can be done from home—when parents quit their jobs to stay home with their children who are doing 100% remote learning, that’s a hit to GDP.
What do they do every summer?
They send their kids to day camps that run through the summer.
Working parents put together a variety of solutions to cope with child care needs during summer. They hire babysitters, they place kids in summer day cares (sometimes on elem campuses), they ask grandparents for help if they live nearby, they put kids in summer camps, they take paid or unpaid leave from their jobs; they take vacation with the kids—they juggle everything.
Many of these summer solutions are expensive for the average American working family.
During the school year, childcare in the form of elementary and middle schools being open and in person and on campus is a blessing for working parents, and it’s been a baked-in assumption in our society for many years that it exists as a child care solution.
(And keep in mind that most families involve working parents and in fact most “families” these days are actually single working moms).
...not that there was any learning going on there anyway.
