Johannesburg, South Africa - A massive ship called the RV Polarstern spent 389 days drifting slowly across the Arctic, trapped in ice. It was a scientific mission on an unprecedented scale, and the people who took part say their findings should serve as a warning that if action isn't taken, humans in every corner of the world will pay the price.
Just before she set sail more than a year ago, Rhode Island native Dr. Alison Fong told CBS News that she and her colleagues on the Polarstern were "looking at creating a whole picture of what the Arctic is going to do in the coming years."
The picture that emerged from their makeshift labs-on-ice and high-tech equipment is not a pretty one. It is devastating proof, the scientists say, of a dying Arctic Ocean, where ice-free summers could become a reality in just decades due to manmade greenhouse gases warming the planet.
But the world they returned to after more than a year locked in the ice looked very different. They left dry land before anyone had heard of COVID-19.
"Some people think that perhaps because of this focus on the global pandemic, we also can't address the issues of climate and global warming. But they're not exclusive," said Fong. "We're trying to do things. But the reality is, trying is not enough anymore. We must take action."
In part, that action boils down to what climatologists and environmental campaigners have been urging for years: producing clean energy, recycling, re-purposing and consuming less.
"The choices we need to make about how we sustain humanity must be different."
She believes that it will take different choices on that scale, at the national and international level, to help halt the damage to our warming world.

WTF are these people talking about?? Massive Pollution Caused an Ice Age in the 1970’s, if it wasn’t for massive pollution causing Global Warming in the 1980’s and 1990’s we would have all froze to death. Thank God for Global Warming, the next ICE AGE is GUARANTEED to Happen.

Let’s just say that climate change is not all natural, and man has an effect. Let’s just say that the things that will happen wouldn’t have happened anyway, just faster because of man. Let’s even go ahead and cooperate with their presumption about making value judgements about what changes to climate are “good” and “bad”. Let us also not just assume that “bad” things will happen in certain places, like maybe the Sahara dessert expands, or the coast-lines recede, but instead let us leap ALLLL the way into saying it will be “bad” for all mankind, and everywhere.
Do not attempt reason with these people. They are well past that. They intend to loot you and I and facts be damned.
I would think we could sure use some warming to melt all that ice.
The fresh water free in the biosphere might be nice, too.
Not that we can do anything about it, though.
Or trapped in ice because you put yourself in the middle of it.....aka....basic stupidity.
No effective action by humans will alter the earth’s climate.

And it’s easy to do! All you have to do is the following:
1. Stop using all cars (except for those in charge)
2.Stop using energy (except for those in charge)
3. Start living in tents and yurts (except for those in charge)
4.Stop eating all meats (except for those in charge)
5. Kill off 9/10ths of the population of Earth, ESPECIALLY those pesky white, Christian Americans
6. Live as an agrarian, feudal society, answering only to those placed in charge over you, whom you will obey with unquestioning obedience, forever and ever, amen.
Doesn’t that sound like fun?

I seem to remember scientists saying this exact phrase decades ago.
I think I remember reading that according to one theory the Arctic was open during the last ice age.
Did they study the Volcanic Gekkel Ridge that runs under the arctic ?? Fundamental question should be, is Arctic Ice melting from the top down or bottom up ??? Top down would seem to indicate warming air, bottom up, warming water. If the water is warming in the Arctic, can the Gekkel Ridge volcanoes be the culprit ??? We are not seeing similar ice melts in Antarctic so it infers the problem may be specific to the Arctic region and that would lend some credence to a geological cause as opposed to manmade global warming.
How can they make such prediction on one such year-long experience? Shouldn’t they need a base line to work from?
