COVID-19: People told to open windows this winter to decrease coronavirus risk

People are being encouraged to open their windows this winter to decrease the risk of catching coronavirus.

The Department for Health has released a video showing how virus particles linger in enclosed spaces.

It also shows how letting fresh air in can reduce the risk of infection by more than 70%.

Coronavirus is spread through the air by droplets and smaller particles known as aerosols when they are exhaled from the nose and mouth of an infected person as they breathe, speak or cough.

They move in a similar way to smoke but are invisible, and the majority of virus transmissions happen indoors - where the particles can be suspended in the air for hours and build up over time.

The longer people spend in the same room as these particles, the more likely they are to become infected.

With winter approaching and people spending more time at home, experts have recommended opening windows for around 15 minutes at a time regularly throughout the day, or leaving them open a small amount continuously.

Public Health Minister Jo Churchill said ventilation is "essential" over winter.

She said: "As the weather gets colder and wetter, letting in fresh air in short burst helps to reduce the risk of coronavirus in our homes.

"We should all remember: open your windows, and 'hands, face, space'."

But isn’t COVID outside my house? Do I need to use a mask on the open windows as you mandated for when I go outside? Will you deliver window masks or do I need to go out to get them, there by risking exposure to COVID. This is all so confusing!

I stayed in a fine hotel in Berlin on a job back in 2000 in February.

Every evening when I came back to the hotel from work, THE WINDOWS WERE WIDE OPEN! Cold as heck! Probably below freezing.

The housekeeping staff did this to EVERY ROOM.

I finally had to go to the management and ask them to stop doing that!...................

Study: Nicotine May Lower Risk of Catching Coronavirus

My favorite line:

Smoking is often-fatal, and almost certainly outweighs the negative effects of COVID-19 itself.

So light up if you don't want to catch COVID, but you're guaranteed to die (after 30-40 years of regular smoking) if you smoke.

So damned if you do, damned if you don't.

How about going outside and breath some fresh air into your lungs to dilute any shit you may have.

How stupid is this. You think we're ALL harboring a virus in our house.

And by the way...the air is getting circulated by my forced air furnace.

The greatest benefit of opening windows is not reduce aerosols but of increased humidity in the house. Low humidity dries out your mucus membranes thereby makes you more susceptible to infections.

Meanwhile in China, not that far from Wuhan, they’re not wearing masks according to someone I know living there and I’ve seen pictures.

So lockdown and stay inside and then open all the windows to let the outside air inside. WTF?

Either these "experts" think the public are really stupid or more likely, the public is listening to some really stupid "experts".
