The man who helped the United States establish friendly relations with China in the 1970s now says he is alarmed by escalating tensions between the two countries.
Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, 97, is calling for the U.S. and China to establish rules of engagement for their rising competition on the global stage or risk leading into a blowup similar to World War I.
"Our leaders and [China's] leaders have to discuss the limits beyond which they will not push threats,” Kissinger said on Wednesday during a virtual discussion hosted by the Economic Club of New York. "They have to find a way of conducting such a policy over an extended period of time ... You can say this is totally impossible, and if it’s totally impossible, we will slide into a situation similar to World War I."
Kissinger is recognized with establishing relations between Communist China and the U.S. while he served under President Richard Nixon. He helped open up trade with the country and laid the groundwork for Nixon's historic weeklong visit to Beijing, Hangzhou, and Shanghai in 1972.

If it’s inevitable, now is the time to do “business”, not in 10 years.
It was a big long trench. Just on the other side of the wall.
But seriously, what Henry doesn’t realize is that we do not anticipate honoring any of those treaties with our Asian Allies. Except maybe Japan.
If Joe gets in, he will feed the commie beast.
He was on the CCP payroll for many years as a lobbyist.
Kissinger is the same class of psychopath as Soeos.
Buttkisser still taking it up the khyber for his chicom pals
Soeos.?....Who he? Chinaman?
Yes yea. And the “solution” is for us to give in, right?
Why do decent people die young and scum like this seem to hang on forever?
Soros.
Oh bull s—t!
China was an enigma. We didn’t get intel out of there for
months after things happened. They were a nuclear power
and the United States decided to play them off against the
U. S. S. R. in the midst of the Cold War.
The Iron and Bamboo curtains were tight in those days, and
China was about as tight as a clams ass.
Opening up China put a massive body of people with nuclear
weapons on the U. S. S. R.’s door step.
There was nothing wrong with signing mutual trade pacts with
China in conventional terms. It was in the late 80s and
early 1990s that the powers that be decided to sell out
the United States lock stock and barrel.
Nixon and Kissinger didn’t agree to giving China our
patent database. One Republican Senator actually pushed
the idea. No business is allowed to manufacture in China
until it hands over the patent information for all
processes.
What Kissinger signed onto had nothing to do with what
is going on today, and to blame this on him is like
blaming Reagan for the Left’s proliferation in the
United States.
Kissinger isn’t pristine, but this hogwash about him
setting up what is going on now is idiotic. It’s
miles from the truth of it.
Oh bull s—t!
No. Nixon had second thoughts about engaging the PRC as a counterweight to the Soviets. Kissinger never has - he's continued to make excuses for them in the decades since, and has continued to profit by his association with the PRC. Of course succeeding governments and government officials have expanded on his opening and made their own profits - I never said otherwise. But Kissinger started it, has always abetted it and is still doing so. Everything the guy has to say, including his current "warnings", should be considered in that light.
Kissinger has not held any power over such matters since 1973.
There was no problem with opening up China. What our greedy
politicians and businessmen decided to do, was neither Nixon’s
or Kissinger’s doing.
There can be no doubt who the Butchers of Beijing want to see sworn in on January 20.
I’m old enough to remember Nixon’s trip to China....it was widely covered on television.
In retrospect, that trip was a mistake.
I read he drinks formaldehyde-mango smoothies.
Thank you. I try.
Wake up Hank!
Bush/Clinton/0bama/Biden sold America to the Red Chinese for personal gain.
The Red Chinese tried to install their puppet as President of the USA
Is this a good time to say “No more”
