Convalescent plasma is ineffective for covid-19
British Medical Journal ^ | 10/22/2020 | Elizabeth B Pathak

Convalescent plasma generated great enthusiasm in the earliest days of the coronavirus disease

The PLACID Trial was a rigorous randomized controlled study on a topic of enormous global importance

In prespecified, intention-to-treat analyses, the PLACID Trial investigators found no net benefit associated with convalescent plasma in patients admitted to hospital with moderate covid-19

there was no net clinical benefit to patients

In other words, another expensive, hard-to-scale, "promising" treatment, convalescent plasma, looks like it doesn't work ...

Consider the source...

Trust but verify.

The convalescent plasma made available for patients in May under an EUA was not titered - some units had a lot of antibody, some had little.

It was a good idea, but there is no way to make sense out of this “trial” since we do not know who got what in terms of neutralizing antibody.

I’d take it!

The convalesvent plasma reduced viral load — no question about that — but the prothrombotic potential is messing up the receiving patients.

I don’t think this means that plasma with covid antibodies won’t help you recover from covid, but it may still make you immune.

I don't believe a damn thing "medical journals" say. Ever since they worked overtime trying to discredit Dr. Zev Zelenko and also Dr. Didier Raoult, it was evident medicine wasn't what they were peddling, but left wing political propaganda.

They cared nothing for the lives of patients, but cared everything for winning political favor and rewards.

Would whole blood have been better?

As opposed to plasma, which has the platelets filtered out.

I am not a doctor, and really don't know what's customary here. I heard that using donated antibodies has had some success, was that wrong?

Hmmm... Like you, I wonder.

MAYBE — just maybe - when Fauci invented the virus he made sure it only could be treated by the vaccine he invented. Just throwing out a possibility!

Many of us have seen patients who tested positive for anti-Covid antibodies subsequently develop Covid infections/reinfections. That's very concerning, as even if a vaccine elicits a significant antibody response, it might not be enough to prevent infection.

I was hoping that Trump would offer some of his plasma to Joe at the debate if he wasn’t feeling too perky.

The big criticism of the study is that it was used too late in the disease. An earlier study that used it sooner showed some help. Nothing dramatic.

I thought there were extremely few confirmed cases of a “cured” patient subsequently getting re-infected. Like a handful of confirmed cases.

It's interesting that video of the Houston doctor is dated April 17, 2020. It's curious that neither HCQ or Ivermectin is part of the MATH+ protocol. Heparin is the blood thinner / anti-coagulant.

What the paper concluded was that convalescent plasma worked in producing neutralizing antibodies that reduced the SARS-COV-2 viral load but both arms of the study had about the same mortality and other adverse effects. This was because other proteins in the human plasma caused blood clotting and cardiac events that led to negative outcomes.

This would not occur in monoclonal antibody therapies like Regeneron that are manufactured and do not contain all the other proteins in natural human plasma.

Convalescent plasma was considered an attractive therapy because it could be easily produced and would be available without FDA approval. It would probably work if patients were also given anticoagulents like Xarelto or Eliquis to reduce the coagulation risk but it would be better to use Regeneron’s drug which has no coagulation risk.

I believe Fauci supported this 100%. I’ll google around.

Man oh man, wouldn't THAT have been one for the ages? I can just see Dementia Joe's face now. :-)
