A Fleet without a Rudder (The U.S. Navy's optimized fleet response plan is failing. It is redeploying ships on short notice for no apparent strategic purpose.)

There is much concern that the Navy today is grinding itself down, men and equipment, with longer and more frequent deployments, less yard time for maintenance and we're not even fighting a war right now.

Anyhow, this article has been a very popular point of discussion within the Fleet.

I imagine the ChiComs might be a source of concern.

Trump has to dump the Obama flunkies and simultaneously get a SecDef who has a clue.

Eisenhower spent almost her entire deployment in the 5th Fleet AOR (Middle East).

Even more to the point, if the United States identified Russia and China as its key strategic competitors, the Indo-Pacific as the primary theater for competition, and the Middle East, in Clausewitzian terms, as a “secondary front” or “lesser objective,” why is it sending the bulk of its combat power to the Persian Gulf?

I know the answer to this one. During the Vietnam War we called it "ticket punching". Every officer needs that combat zone deployment for the service jacket.

Thank You for posting. Great article for the concerns regarding the Fleet.

Anyhow, here's a recent photo of me.

I'm in the red shirt.

206 days at sea without a port call. COMTUEX and go. Left Norfolk. Returned to Norfolk 206 days later. No stops in between. After 30 days, many people lost the music on their iPhones because there had been no internet update. The only land we saw were the Straits of Gibraltar, the Suez Canal, and a few islands off Yemen during the Bab-el-Mandeb transit.

Had a few beer days though!

I would guess they are a main reason for our ‘no purpose’ deployments

Thank you—and more so to your family (if you were able to maintain such) under those conditions. Jeepers. What some endure for the reminder of the nation that hides in the shadows protected by those like you.

No it was not a POW camp but it also was definitely not summer camp for the crew. Wow.

They used to justify the high tempo of operations in peacetime by saying that our sailors and officers were better than anyone else’s.

I hope they don’t think they can correct shipboard incompetence without reestablishing Surface Warfare Officer School and getting women off ships.

Could be true. They're still handing out the GWOT Expeditionary Medal just for showing up where there's sand in the air.

Women on ships aren't going anywhere. There's more women in the Navy today than there were yesterday, and the day before. And there will be more tomorrow. I'm not sure where people get the idea that women on ships are a problem. Sure, there are occasional pregnancies and sexual relationships but it's not a crisis. Getting caught having sex while underway is punished severely. Loss of rank is guaranteed.

There's not a problem with shipboard incompetence. Sailors today are the most educated, disciplined, and professional that there's ever been. Many of the women I serve with are without a doubt my hardest-working and most dependable Shipmates. Today's Navy relies more on technical aptitude rather than brute strength. Women do just fine.

Zero.

Officially, we were Covid-free the entire deployment. Not pulling into port helped to ensure this.

I should hope the problems, if true, should be more a point of discussion than the article.
