There will be no miracle on 34th Street this year. Santa Claus won't be visiting any Macy's stores in 2020, ending a 159-year holiday season tradition.
The department store's tradition started in 1861, but Santa meet-and-greets won't be happening this year because of concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, Macy's (M) is creating an interactive virtual experience.
"To replicate the magical experience of visiting Macy's Santaland for children and their families, we will shift to a virtual engagement this year," Susan Tercero, Macy's vice president of Branded Entertainment, said in a press release. It will be available online from November 27 to December 24.
Macy's will limit the number of children who can participate: up to three can take part in the customized experience at one time, the company said.
The experience starts with a greeting from virtual elves who lead the way through Santa's village and workshop, stopping to see the sights and play interactive games. At the end, kids will meet Santa through an interactive video, where they'll be able to share their holiday wish list and take a selfie, which families can download immediately, with Santa.
Even though Macy's won't host Santa in person this year, some malls are still participating in real-life Santa visits.
Brookfield Properties, a subsidiary of Brookfield Asset Management (BAM) Property Partners and the second-largest mall operator in the country, said Santa will be in 134 of its more than 150 malls. But Santa will remain behind plexiglass.

Is Mac’s stil in operation? Who know?
Even if you can’t sit on his lap, why can’t the old man sit on a throne and wave and laugh with the crowd of shoppers who pass by?
That’s okay, customers aren’t visiting Macys stores either. :P
Hey Macy’s, pass out baby pacifiers to all who enter your store to help them Feel Safe.
Oh, bullshit! This is beyond stupid.
If America really has become such a bunch of 5-letter words for “cat” beginning with “p” and ending with “ussies”, the nation deserves to fall.
Thank God for FR, where a person can see proof that NOT all Americans have sunk so low.
Will they be replacing santa with mao
Maybe Macy’s will have Nativity scenes?
“With my dyslexia, I ended up selling my soul to Santa.”
I gave him a better deal with drinking and carousing in the FLorida Keys.
Santa probably has preexisting conditions, hypertension and diabetes most likely
No miracle on 2020 Street.
I will be greeting children at an historic mansion nearby.
When I was 5 years old, my terrific dad made sure I went to the Macy’s parade. It was just breathtaking. OOOs, and AHHHs everywhere.
Tragic that kids today do not believe in Santa. And that Macy’s cancelled parade. The really did not need to. It’s televised to a jillion cities and kids all over America can enjoy it.
We NEED a miracle on 34th St; and, coast to coast and border to border on Main St.
Stop surrendering all that is good and wholesome and hopeful to the ChiCom scamdemic!
I ended up selling mine to satin.
yeah this country...the world... is so stupid right now. But not all of us.
I hate to say this but these days department store Santas could be mostly Pedos that get a kick outta having little kids sitting on their laps, maybe a little hair sniffing too - they are drawn to these jobs.
Look for Bye-den to be volunteering after he loses the election!
Macy’s 1950: Families took their small children to sit on Santa’s lap and tell him what gifts they wanted as mothers listened intently.
Macy’s 2020: Ethnically-entitled villagers looted tv’s and iPhones through smashed-in windows while cops stood down on orders from liberal Democrat mayors.
