Beach Boys splinter over politics again as Brian Wilson repudiates Trump fundraiser
LA Times ^ | Oct 19 2020 | By LAURA ZORNOSA

God only knows that, two weeks out from the presidential election, the stakes are high.

On Sunday, a version of the Beach Boys — the touring incarnation of the group led by cofounder Mike Love — performed at a last-minute fundraiser for President Trump near Newport Beach in Orange County. Brian Wilson and Al Jardine, two other founding members of the beloved California band, were less than happy about the news.

“But he was a musical genius.
I guess it goes with the territory.....”

Yep. It’s one thing to sing songs and quite another to create music like Brian Wilson. So I give credit where it is due.

Despite his politics Brian was a great writer. ‘Was’ as in distant past ... as in the 1960s. He hasn’t done much since a period of time when the Beatles were still together. Think about that. It is pathetic that a great writer like this screwed up his head and gave up almost his entire life to live as a has-been. What a waste of talent.

Even the 1960s version of Brian Wilson has been quite overrated. Great? Yes. Genius? Hardly. Maybe a legend in his own mind and the warped minds of music critics.

Well I used the word "encounter" because I couldn't really remember his level of involvement with Manson and his "Helter Skelter" family. 8>)

Thanks for the input. 8>)

“Brian, we have a citation here for you sir under Section 936A of the California Catch a Wave Statute. Brian, you’re in violation of Paragraph 12: failing to surf, neglecting to use a state beach for surfing purposes, and otherwise avoiding surfboards, surfing and surf.”

“He even had a brief encounter with Charles Manson and his “family”. I think tat encounter was to score drugs, if I remember correctly.”

I THINK that was Dennis Wilson...

Do you know any liberal people who are truly happy with their lives? I think there are some who are, but they mostly seem like they always need something to complain about.

Brian Wilson has had mental problems for a long time.

F Brian, Mike is done with him, the show must go on.

By the way, easily one of the best evenings of my life, seeing them perform for 2 hours and 40 minutes. It's not like any other concert, it's a moment, every song stirs up something you are connected to, flawlessly executed and perfect setlist (minus Mike's solo thang "Picses Brothers").

A friend of mine who, like me, was born during the Korean War described his shock when a girl he was attempting to woo told him that she was saving herself to marry a Beach Boy. He thought she meant that she wanted to marry a bum who hung out at the beach. Although he was a teenager who grew up in Southern California in the sixties, he had never heard of the Beach Boys. He explained that he liked to listen to Adult Contemporary music music stations that played songs by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, etc.

You are correct, and I humbly stand corrected, as Brian hated him. 8>)

I knew it was a Wilson though. But posting from memory is not an advisable thing to do when your memory from so many years ago may not be as sharp as you like to think it is. 8>)

A year before Sharon Tate was murdered, Charles Manson was living in quiet anonymity, making music in the home of Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson.

Brian Wilson, the leader of the group and oldest Wilson brother, took an immediate disliking to the man, and flat out refused to work with him.

I dunno, he was acclaimed for Pet Sounds, I didn't like the album.

i equate Pet Sounds to James Joyce's 'Ulysses'. You know it's supposed to be a masterpiece of high art but it's no fun to read. Personally I think Pet Sounds (a commercial flop) may have been eye popping to some (like Paul McCartney, he says) in 1966 but nearly 60 years later it's really easy to listen to it and say 'what's the fuss all about?'

I saw the Beach Boys in 2014 in Belleville Illinois. They sang about 35 songs bumper to bumper with one intermission. Was floored by Mike Love, 73 at the time, going through the program like he was 30 years old.

Correct. Dennis was the original surfer and the drummer for the group. He died tragically. All the women went wild for him, ignoring the rest of the band members. He had a lot of behavioral problems. Also the whole Wilson clan had authority problems with the overbearing father who was a songwriter in his own right and who tried to control them musically. Brian was the one who was able to cut the group loose from the father because he had very original ideas about the music. Brian is/was a genius. Even the professional musicians who backed the group (The Wrecking Crew) on their later recordings acknowledged the originality of the young Brian Wilson. The Beatles themselves were also on record as acknowledging his immense talent and contribution to the genre.

As a clarification...

“Pet Sounds” was easily the best BB album.

Except for “Sloop John B”, Brian wrote only the music and Tony Asher wrote the lyrics.

Brian’s lyrics tended to be slightly above BubbleGum.

Pet Sounds is a genius album and a gift for every generation to come. Funny how pure musical talent does not guarantee political talent. Brian does not support Trump. Mike Caulfield, another musical genius, rejects Trump. The Wilsons grew up in Gardena, CA, about six miles from the beach and were loaded with talent.

Also the whole Wilson clan had authority problems with the overbearing father...

He was the initial crazy one in the family, the way he treated the boys.

*** Brian Wilson’s work was admired by every part of the music industry, and one of his biggest fans was The Beatles’ Paul McCartney. The Beatles bassist named “God Only Knows,” as his favorite song of all time and referred to the track when asked about his melodic bass playing.

“God Only Knows’ is one of the few songs that reduces me to tears every time I hear it. It’s really just a love song, but it’s brilliantly done. It shows the genius of Brian. I’ve actually performed it with him and I’m afraid to say that during the sound check I broke down. It was just too much to stand there singing this song that does my head in and to stand there singing it with Brian,” stated McCartney in 2007 after having the opportunity to perform the song with Brian Wilson. ***
