And after they burn the stores down, they complain that there is no place to shop.

Who are these 'brazen shoplifters'?

Darker.

Obviously attributed to racism.

Your example reminded me of a company called ‘Service Merchandise’.

I recall there were showroom items, but tags that you took to the counter. And the items were brought to you after purchase.

As a kid, thought it was a cool store.

In terms of the pay the security officers receive, it is not expensive at all. Unarmed security officers typically are paid just above minimum wage per hour. Armed make only a dollar more per hour. I know from personal experience as a security officer in Los Angeles during the 2008 recession, and today in Charlotte, my roommate makes only $14 an hour as an armed guard. Their last raise was 8 cents an hour. I am not kidding. The security companies might get lucrative contracts, but they don’t pay their employees well at all.

There is no solution.
Have you forgotten that California pretty much legalized shoplifting under $950 (Proposition 47)? It is only a misdemeanor. The cops don’t show up.
Even if the security guard stopped them (a risky proposition) the cops wouldn’t arrest them. They might arrest the security guards for false imprisonment.

If you've ever wondered why the left likes to identify certain areas of the country as "food deserts" this is the reason. Retail outlets are not in business to get stolen blind. Which is why you have this:

Some family friends ran a grocery store in “the hood.” 3rd generation, was once an area of German and Polish immigrants.

They had typical problems, but were well-known and respected by local folks, knew most customers by name, employed local kids, adapted business to local standards, needs and problems. They refused to put everything by plexiglass, refused to sell hard liquor, etc…. They carried a full range of vegetables even though it was a money-loser.

The 3rd generation got into their late 50s and finally sold out to some Arabs. The new owners put bars on all windows and bulletproof glass on counters. Got rid of most fresh and bakery products, put in a hard liquor section, etc. etc.

The area immediately become a food desert. Not another grocery store within at least 5 miles.

The cops rarely show up even in states that don’t have this stupid law.

They simply have too many other priorities to be responding to dozens of petty theft calls. A quarter-century ago the retail industry went to something called “civil recovery” where you basically sue the thief for the value of the item plus 10x damages.

Of course most of these people are generally impervious to judgments, making it all pretty pointless. Can’t get blood from a stone.

I used to work in the retail industry so I know something of this. The law also said if you caught a minor shoplifting you could only release him to the police or his parents. In one particular town where civilization had largely collapsed the cops would not come, and the parents were often either dead, in rehab or in prison. So we had to regularly break the law by cutting the kids loose. You can’t detain them forever.

It’s what San Franciscans voted for - and presumably will continue to vote for. No sympathy.

That is the real problem. Liberals cannot protect law-abiding citizens and their property and instead concentrate on protecting the rights of criminals.

Private security guards will do nothing. Eventually, stores in these locales will have to go to some form of the Service Merchandise model, shopping by appointment, or having everything behind plexiglass so that goods and items are not “shopper” accessible. Even then, I am not sure that determined shoplifters will be deterred for long.

A few years back I volunteered as a judge on a panel listening to high-school seniors give speeches on topics of their choice.

One young black man had chosen the topic of black owned businesses. And I must say he did quite a credible job. Well-researched and his material was very well presented.

They had a Q&A at the end and I asked him what got him interested in this topic. I will never forget his reply.

“Because I really hate it when I walk into a store in my neighborhood and see that it’s owned by an Indian or an AAAAAA-rab.”

Steeped like a teabag in the topic of racism and he could not recognize it coming out of his own mouth.

Service Merchandise went out of business two decades ago. Perhaps not the ideal model.

[[[Like a bank, you go in and up to the counter and tell the clerk what you want. He then sends a boy into the back to fetch it. You pay for it and leave. You never get to go back into the stock room.]]]

The Service Merchandise Model or any supply house. Its hell on impulse sales and comparison shopping though.
