Your example reminded me of a company called ‘Service Merchandise’.
I recall there were showroom items, but tags that you took to the counter. And the items were brought to you after purchase.
As a kid, thought it was a cool store.
Don’t remember the name of it but we had a store like that. Everything was under lock and key or glass. There were clerks that would take it out so you could feel it, look at it. Then you received a tag to take to the checkout line. Once purchased it came out of the stockroom on one of 2 different conveyor belts. An employee at the bottom of the conveyor belt would pick the item up, look at it, and then call your name and hand it to you.

Me too! Loved seeing the boxes come down the ramp from the upper level. Bought my first calculator there in 1978.
Is that something like the Blue Chip Stamps? Where you submit your book of stamps and you get an item that you want that is shown on the store book and clerk goes and retrieves it and brings it to you.
I remember Service Merchandise from the early 80’s.
A girl i once knew worked at one in Dedham, MA.
I really like their catalogs at the time.
