Textron Systems announced Thursday that it will deliver an all-electric version of its M5 Ripsaw Robotic Combat Vehicle prototype to the U.S. Army for experimentation next year. Earlier this year, the Army selected a Textron team to develop its subsidiary Howe & Howe's unmanned vehicle for the service's Robotic Combat Vehicle, or RCV, Medium platform. The Army wants to develop a light, medium and heavy version of the RCV to give commanders the option of sending unmanned vehicles into combat against enemy forces. The service selected QinetiQ North America to build four light versions of the RCV. Textron is scheduled to deliver four prototypes of its 10-ton M5, which resembles a lightweight tank powered by diesel and hybrid electric motors, by the end of the year.

I'm proudly posting this, as my son is the lead fabricator on this project at Howe & Howe / Textron. This is the kid who preferred to spend countless hours out in my shop as a youth, rather than doing his schoolwork. Six years in the USN (subs) honed his discipline, and gave him a million dollar education that the university system could not offer him. "That's my boy!"

I wonder what the power requirements will be for charging a group of electric tanks. Seems like they’d need more than a towed diesel powered generator.

Every Combat Bde will have an attached Engineer Bde who's function will be to build solar and wind power plants in the Combat Bde's rear area.

As long as decent men like you and your son, have the right and opportunity to exercise their passions and ingenuity, despite all the vile leftists, America will be all right.

I rarely post vanities. In fact, my last one was about the day he shipped off to Great Lakes USN boot camp. It turned out to be the day his adulthood began. We have two grown-up kids; both are solid citizens.

The RCV is a wave of the future. Part of the Army’s Manned UnManned Teaming (MUM-T) effort. Soldier experiments are underway to inform requirements.

Wish they had included a troop standing next to it to give us a little scale on how big it is.

I suspect that they might get a quick recharge from, of all things, a suitcase-sized capacitor.

Because of railgun technological development, capacitors that would have formerly required a flatbed rail car to carry have been reduced to suitcase small. I’ve no idea of their weight or charge storage stability decay.

But this means they could be charged in the rear area, ideally with a nuclear reactor, then sent forward with enough *mojo* to propel a Navy Cruiser for an hour.

Is he at the Slidell or New Orleans location? I’m assuming Slidell, but you know what they say about when one does assume. 8>)
