In the first presidential debate between President Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden, voters who watched Tuesday night say Biden won the debate, but those who watched the heated exchanges overwhelmingly called the debate's tone negative, and most said they felt annoyed watching it.
Forty-eight percent say Biden won, while 41% think Trump was the winner. Biden's margin here is not too different than his lead in national polls. Ten percent called the debate a tie.
Immediately after the debate, the CBS News Battleground Tracker interviewed likely voters nationwide who watched the debate in order to get their reaction.
More than eight in 10 voters who watched describe the debate's tone as negative, including majorities of each candidate's supporters.

where did you see that independenents favored Trump?
I believe this poll as much as I believe the MSMs other polls - not one bit.
It’s right in the article.
CBS announced during their broadcast that Trump won Independents in their poll as well.
Makes me think there are once again a lot of shy Trump voters out there who are not showing up in most polls.
The only way Biden wins is if a decent number of Republican voters abandon Trump, and while that could happen, I’m just not seeing it.
ViacomCBS.
Nuff said.
Who are the voters that watched, the debate watchers, are they on drugs?
+1. James Comey is on today, too...
No. Biden didnt have a change in his direction performance it was more of a meh performance......it was a messy debate and Trump was fighting 1 against 2 so he had to be aggressive and therefore dominate the air which people are used too even if they dont like it (his supporters do like it)
I don't think you and I were watching the same debate. Wallace is not a screamer, but his arguments with President Trump clearly displayed how much he dislikes the President, and how willing he was to take sides instead of being the moderator. He also got pretty prissy about this being "The Chris Wallace Show", and as a result he just got in the way.
Wallace's performance Tuesday night was really the best argument for not having a moderator at all; Wallace is probably going to be the closest to the middle, and he was still obviously on one side of the debate. Let the candidates ask the questions and provide the answers; when the "moderator" wants to take over the show and become what people talk about the next day, there is something very wrong with the process.
If nothing else, eliminating the moderator makes 1-1, not 2-1.

No, I don’t know why it posted twice.
Biden Flip-Flopped all over the place and Wallace helped him get away with it the majority of the time. From the Beginning Wallace helped Biden get more time to prevent Trump from rebutting.
The questions were all Liberal Gotcha-Questions for Trump right out of the Liberal/Democrat lie playbook.
The debate was a fiasco with Wallace as predictably helping Biden.
If this was a Fox debate, folks the next ones are going to be much much worse - unwatchable.
I dont know which debate they were watching, but Donal J Trump mopped the floor with both opponents handily last night. He has total command of the issues and fought back when both men hanged up on him. Bottom line, #NOJOE looked like the fool and demented patient he is and Chris Wallace was inept and laughable.
If anything, the performance should inspire people to get off their ass and onto their knees.
Yes. I could only watch the first hour and saw Trump absolutely represent on the ACB nom, his taxes, Covid and the economy. Even health care (where Republicans are at a fundamental non-Socialist disadvantage) I thought Trump did no worse than a draw. Excellent overall result for #45.
Aside from his stammering a few times, this then raises the question of how accurate pre-debate perceptions of Biden's impaired cognitive state actually were?
are you sure you were replying to me? I didn’t state that biden had a change in his direction performance. And I do agree, it was DJ fighting against 2. But I think Wallace was subtle in his questioning and to those who believe the MSM doesn’t pick sides they likely didn’t notice it which I think made DJ look worse with his interruptions. Chris did not play it fairly. I hope and pray that DJ comes out more composed and does a better job with his comebacks in the next debate.
The undecided will vote their pocketbooks.
You may hate Trump but now you can’t stand BLMiden!
