Comment on "There Will Be Permanent Changes: Apple CEO Tim Cook Weighs in on Working from Home"

For over 20 years, H1B, L1, etc. replaced local s/w workers for cheaper pay (actual pay divided by hours worked). We trained them because their resumes were stuffed with lies and exaggerated skills, which by the way allowed HR and placement agencies to get H1Bs slots.

Last 10 years or more, they are replacing entire systems with products built overseas with a few local sales/support/migration/managers (often H1Bs to boot). These products were quickly written spaghetti code javascript and unstructured backend that were full of bugs, performance and security issues. As it grew over time, the codebase would be hard to fix, enhance, scale and side effects made testing a nightmare.

The cases I’ve witnessed in public organizations is that management lacked the technical skills to evaluate products. Even when staff developers made them aware of these shortcomings they only cared about cost and time. Competent staff left.

So, yes, many older systems are still on Cobol or even plsql but refreshes (often times they were just a newer front end) may be even worse throw aways / money pits in the long run.

Outside of a few large tech companies (FANG etc), the focus is on fast and cheap s/w development. Just like how our manufacturing was moved overseas by management, the same has been happening to s/w. It takes time for the damage to show and now you are seeing it in government/public sectors (even Boeing’s 787 flight s/w).

In time, this country will make less and less and will be fully leveraged on the strength of the US dollar to buy it’s way out. We need to invest in our own people, our own products and focus on quality. Price will go up but this current train of offshoring prices isn’t going to end well.

Finally, the politicians, ceos, and economic advisors needs to measure the country’s success not only by GDP but also by the success of the American people and their families.

Does that count?

I've seen that so many times. Ideally, a Program Manager will focus on cost and schedule -- and a Chief Engineer will focus on quality and production. They need to trade back and forth so that all 4 aspects are focused on, at least to some extent.

But what I've seen repeatedly is the Program Manager focuses on cost and schedule -- and the Chief Engineer focuses on ... cost and schedule. Horrible things follow.

I work from my place and do not know when we will if ever be back in the office as I am in California with a nutjob Governor and mayor who love being dictators.

At work in the last 2 years they have been big changes where half of several depts has been replaced by people from Indian. The top 3 manager levels are now Indian, my irish american manager and white supervisor must be worried....
A supervisor in our east coast half quit for another job after 15 years.

I email other depts and have notice more and more foreign names. One dept that deals with the new Oracle software issues has 19 of 20 people from India. The 1 person who isn’t has been at the company for more then 20 years, the others less then 2 years.

I expect the dept I am at will be replaced as the company hired a large consulting firm and we now have about 8 in training now. It was accidentally slipped out in a group chat session when the supervisor mentioned a training schedule. Odd thing is we have not been introduced to any of our “co-workers”.
I guess the managers from Indian figure why bother as we will be replaced......

So what will Apple do with their brand new shiny headquarters? Turn it into a roller rink?

For once an article actually dimensions L1 says. Most H1B workers I know make a lot of money, often more than US workers. They can take their H1B to any company that’s willing to pay the money to sponsor them. A lot of companies think it’s too expensive. The l1 visas are different because you have to find a company willing to sponsor your H1B Visa. Unless they’re from Australia, Canada, Singapore, or Chile. A lot of companies, especially startups, are not willing to pay the $20,000 plus dollars to sponsor an H1B Visa. People don’t realize how expensive it is to hire an H1B.

That’s terribly sad to hear.

Can you relocate?

Find work, elsewhere?

Is Minnesota still in the horizon?

#7 I have quite a bit of money to retire so I am lucky there. I am planning on it soon. I am waiting on my AMD stock late Oct quarterly report. If the AMD stock I own did not go up anymore I still have enough for some 20 years just spending the principle plus I start to collect social security in 5 years which alone pays for the roof over my head so the savings will last 30+ years. The stock though will continue to go up and up so I am better off then my co-workers who are in their mid 20’s and 30’s and will have to get new jobs and worry about the next group of H1B visa holders.

BTW AMD stock since Jan 2018 has gone up nearly 650% and in the last year nearly 300%. Up to $92 in Sept from $28+ last October. $13.74 in Jan 2018.
It is now at $78 which is about 280% for about a year. Predictions are $120 to $225 a share in 2021 and 2022. I would love to be laid off as I get at least 26 weeks unemployment money plus if you go to school it is 50 weeks. You just take classes along the lines of work you have done. That money would pay half my bills with the other half from borrowed money from the broker at 7% for the coming year while I wait for my stock go up and up in 2021 : )

Then why do we see articles and comments about many still being hired?

Once an Indian is in a position to make hiring decisions, the last American has been hired, and most likely, all remaining Americans will be driven to leave.

Ethnic groups in my organization will only hire from their own group in my company.
