They're Lining Up to Smear Amy Coney Barrett For Being a Devout Catholic after she spent a second day at the White House

Amy Coney Barrett spent a second day at the White House yesterday, almost guaranteeing that Donald Trump will choose her to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court.

She’s not being interviewed for the job. She’s being prepped to deal with the coming onslaught of smears, half-truths, and outright lies that are designed to make her appear to be a monster in a dress.

Welcome to American democracy in the 21st century.

The media got a head start with Newsweek’s slimeball story about Barrett being a drooling religious fanatic.

Fox News:

Barrett is a devout Catholic, and the magazine described her (as previous profiles have) as a member of People of Praise, “the charismatic Christian parachurch organization, which was founded in South Bend, Indiana in 1971, teaches that men have authority over their wives. Members swear a lifelong oath of loyalty to one another and are expected to donate at least 5 percent of their earnings to the group.”

So she should be disqualified because of her religious affiliation? Isn’t that the essence of anti-Catholic prejudice?

Newsweek went a step further and invoked Margaret Atwood’s novel, “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “where women’s bodies are governed and treated as the property of the state under a theocratic regime.”

Well, that sounds like some fanatical group, alright — except Pope Francis, the most liberal pope in history, named one of the members of People of Praise auxiliary bishop of Portland.

Not quite the drooling fanatics they’re made out to be. In fact, they accept both Protestants and Catholics as members and believe men to be the “spiritual leaders” of the family,

WHAT IS THE PEOPLE OF PRAISE?

FROM WIKIPEDIA:

People of Praise is a Christian intentional community that provides spiritual direction and opportunities for service to its members.

As a parachurch organisation, membership is open to any baptized Christian who affirms the Nicene Creed and agrees to the community’s covenant. The majority of its members are Catholics, but Protestants can also join, reflecting the ecumenical nature of People of Praise.

It has 22 branches in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean, with approximately 1,700 members. It founded Trinity Schools, which are aligned with the philosophy of Classical Christian education.

People of Praise was formed in 1971 by Kevin Ranaghan and Paul DeCelles. Both men were involved in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, in which Pentecostal religious experiences such as baptism in the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues and prophecy were practiced by Catholics. In its early history, it influenced the institutional development of the Catholic Charismatic movement in the United States and played important roles in national charismatic conferences.

People of Praise practice a form of spiritual direction that involves the supervision of a member by a more spiritually mature person called a “head”. People of Praise maintains that members retain their freedom of conscience under such direction. The community excludes women from the highest leadership positions and teaches that men are the spiritual leaders of their families. At the same time, it encourages women to pursue higher education and employment.

Peter Leslie Smith, a Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon, has been a member since 1983.

“...teaches that men have authority over their wives.”

I question whether that is an accurate characterization.

I hope Trump is doing razzle-dazzle trolling, making everyone think it’ll be ACB — and then he’ll pull the old switcheroo and name someone who hasn’t been discussed much.

Given the dystopian premise of The Handmaid’s Tale, I’m not sure that the theocratic regime is wrong. Is humanity supposed to just die out? The Left is insane. The Handmaid’s Tale and Harry Potter aren’t real.

We are about to learn what America REALLY thinks about abortion. I suspect a lot more faux-Pro Lifers like John Kasich are going to be smoked out of the woodwork.

Trump should work with Barrett to not just get confirmed, but also use the hearings to gain white female votes that were so critical for Trump in 2020.

Other than the fact that she’s younger, why is she such a superior pick to Barrett?

RE: I question whether that is an accurate characterization

This is based on St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesian Church.

Ephesians 5:23:

21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.

24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[a] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

If I were her, I’d shut down these liberals with one statement, “I’m Catholic just like Democrats JFK, Bobby Kennedy, and Ted Kennedy were Catholic.”

That would be a sign of weakness. Trump is going to ram this down the leftie’s throats.

Trump is making good progress in the black and latino votes, but is slipping in the Karen vote. So how are you going to influence women with a female SCOTUS pick? Dems will have a full throated attack on her.

Anyway about it, we end up with a solid conservative on the court for the next 30 years.

I just heard that ACB has been to the White House a third time now. What’s she doing there so many times? Playing pool?

You and me both. I think she’s the one you can count on to be a solid conservative across all major issues.

I’ll give Trump and ACB the benefit of the doubt if she is the nominee, but she makes me nervous.

Britt is married to a CIA guy (and clerked for Kavanaugh). No thanks.

But Barrett says she’d have to recuse herself when a decision would conflict with teachings from the Vatican. How well would that work out in illegal immigration cases?

I’ll pass on her too.

Trump needs to go beyond the top three touted here IMO (nope: don’t trust Lagoa either), but I doubt he will. I expect another Sandra Day O’Connor at best, which is too bad, because there must be a legit constitutionalist among the qualified women. I think he relied upon his staff to give him a very short list and they only put the Deep State approved on there.
