Many in the media are reacting emotionally to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburgs death. But rather than taking a moment of silence or offering a prayer, many are zeroing in on the future of one issue: abortion.
On September 18, the news broke that Justice Ginsburg had passed away at the age of 87 due to complications of metastatic pancreatic cancer. In response, many in the media saw and took the opportunity to focus on abortion. Thats because the late justices seat, should President Trump choose the next nominee, might not support abortion or Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court case that legalized abortion nationwide, as Ginsburg did.
Media headlines, including ones from larger media outlets, centered on abortion in the wake of the justices death.
A Vox headline proposed, What Ruth Bader Ginsburgs death means for the future of abortion rights. And an NPR headline declared, Ginsburg's Death A 'Pivot Point' For Abortion Rights, Advocates Say for a piece that dedicated twice as many words to abortion supporters than to pro-life leaders.
Other media headlines chose more polarized wording.
One from Al Jazeera read, Ginsburg death brings abortion rights urgency to US election. HuffPost published a piece called, RBGs Fight For Womens Rights Is More Urgent Than Ever. And a Mother Jones headline read, We Need to Save Abortion Rights. But Roe Isnt Enoughand RBG Knew It.
And a Los Angeles Times opinion piece, warned, Ruth Bader Ginsburg protected your abortion rights. Be afraid now that shes gone.
On Twitter, media figures grew more bold in their sentiments.
LETS FUND ABORTION CARE, Susan Rinkunas, a former Vice editor and self-described freelance journalist, tweeted out on September 20. If after RBG's death you're worried about abortion access well, it's inaccessible for LOTS of people now.
Others joined in the call to contribute to abortion funds.
Teen Vogue columnist Lily Herman tweeted on September 18, Gonna take a moment to collect myself, donate to a few local abortion funds, and get ready for the next month and a half.
Likewise, Vice senior social editor Caitlin Schneider tweeted that same day, Gonna take a long walk and think about all the abortion providers I'll be donating money to tonight.
Delish.com news editor Kristin Salaky chimed in that same evening, saying, this is a great time to set up a recurring donation to an org like the Yellowhammer Fund which is already fighting for abortion access for all.
Other media tweeters warned of impending doom.
Also on September 18, comedian Kristina Wong (supposedly) joked, Time to stock up on abortions. #RBGForever.
The same day, Gizmodo writer Shoshana Wodinsky tweeted, abortion access literally saves womens lives. if they touch roe v wade the damage will be unimaginable.
Sesali Bowen, who has written for Nylon and Refinery29, tweeted on September 18, If you're reading this, cancel your return tickets from Mexico. Just stay there until 2025.
And I don't know who needs to hear this but just get the abortion sis, she added. And have them put the IUD in while you on the table. We can't take chances now.
On September 20, The Lily, a product of the Washington Post, published a piece by abortion activist Danielle Campoamor with the headline Ruth Bader Ginsburgs legacy is alive in our fight for abortion rights.
Ginsburg did not die, Campoamor insisted, because she lives on in everyone involved with abortion, from the abortion provider to the woman seeking out an abortion.
You can talk to her when you call the National Network of Abortion Funds to find a clinic that provides abortion care in your area, Campoamor said of the Supreme Court justice, and Youll feel her as you are escorted toward the doors of a clinic by a stranger in a brightly colored vest holding an even more brightly colored umbrella.
Shell be there, comforting you alongside the clinic escort shielding you from hateful protesters, reminding you that you deserve the care you want and need, she urged. That you are loved. That you are valued. That you are in charge of your own body.
Campoamor is right that every person should feel valued and loved, but that should include the unborn human person a person of inherent dignity and worth.
The media should remember Ruth Bader Ginsburgs life in the wake of her death. Ginsburg fought for the rights of women, even if she failed to apply the same protections to women in the womb. But the medias extreme push for abortion to memorialize the Supreme Court justice is not the way to go.
I do not believe the majority want the killing of babies to continue.
We the people are entitled to LIFE, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. But one particular "class" of human beings is denied that right.
One by one, except maybe for NY and Ca, it will be stopped.
There is no “right” to an abortion. The constitution does not spell that out. There is a right to life, liberty, and the persuit of happyness.
Why am I thinking that's not a coinkydink..? 🤔
IMO, one of the really big reasons to overturn Roe v Wade is that it is too much of a political football for the nation. Abortion should be a state-level issue. It shouldn’t be the dominant decision when it is time to name someone to the Supreme Court.
I think it would continue to flourish in all the deep blue states.
One by one, except maybe for NY and Ca, it will be stopped.”
I don’t think so. It will be limited in many states but I think only a few will ban it completely.
I don’t think we should be enabling ghouls to do ghoulish things.
overturning Roe wont outlaw abortion is will simple RESTORE sanity to issues involving it. Once this issue is back in that state houses where it should of been all along. Common sense legislation can be passed, that allows things like the morning after pill while banning surgical abortion in all but the rarest of cases.
Of course, it’s ALL about abortion. It was during the Clarence Thomas hearings, and it is now. This is the power of hate-filled feminazis.
Back alley coat hanger abortions and NO healthcare - that’s the scare line the Dems are saying and the media is promoting.
I agree.
I don’t get the hysteria over a possible conservative Justice, though. Suppose you really believe (erroneously) that Roe v. Wade is like to be overturned *and* that this will result in abortion’s being immediately illegal nationwide (because you’re ignorant).
Wouldn’t you want to take sensible precautions to avoid the “need” for an abortion by, for example, not having sex outside marriage or, if you do, using one of the many available contraceptive methods?
Some people want to live life without consequences. Risk mitigation? Why should I bother? Why can’t I just do whatever I want and never be accountable for anything? It’s a free country, isn’t it???
But I think one of the hallmarks of Conservatism is personal responsibility. That’s really where much of the political divide is.
Agree. Abortion is the only Big Deal with SCOTUS and so many other situations, but it shouldn’t be.
It’s murder, terrible, sinful, incomprehensible, etc., but abortions WILL continue no matter who’s on SCOTUS. The ONLY way to stop abortions is for people’s hearts to change.
If politicians destroy the First Amendment basically outlawing churches (governors and mayors are doing that even as we speak), there’s no CHANCE that people’s hearts will change.
If doing a root cause analysis, abortions are the result of sin on many levels, i.e., killing a baby, promiscuous sex, etc. Sin can only be thwarted or reduced by the Holy Spirit living within people.
Yes, but maybe not the way you think.
When a couple has intercourse and the woman gets pregnant, it's the woman who frequently bears the burden. The woman is treated poorly by society, sometimes by the guy who got her pregnant, and sometimes she is shunned or disowned by her own family.
As long as women are treated that way there will be abortions - one way or another.
TN voted in Heartbeat Law.
The problem as I see it is ending the life of the unborn is getting rid of the ‘result/evidence’ of intercourse...the choice was made long beforehand and with the knowledge this is how pregnancy happens. If she is abandoned or treated unfairly by the guy, or suffers being disowned by her family. In todays world it's very likely she would know where they stand before she engages in sexual intercourse. Therefore she knows beforehand her act would also risk reactions of family and friends.
The federal mandate is the big problem with RvW... I don’t have a problem with it at the state level. I personally am opposed to the procedure but i don’t think it should be unlawful. (Save your flames and insults i’ve heard it all and this is my position) I do truly believe that it’s a privacy issue between the patient and the doctor. That being said, that should be an actual doctor, in an actual hospital that’s credentialed and accountable. Not the hack abortion providers with blood dripping off their fangs as they count the value of human life in dollar bills. The procedure should be covered by insurance if it’s truly for the health of the patient. Any ‘elective’ abortion procedure should be accompanied by a trial by jury because we are talking about the taking of a life here.
The way they have it now planned parenthood is a federally funded McAbortion BloodStained Germ Filled Prophylactic Butcher Shop. Sickening, Filled with Tears, Regret and Overcompensated codependent outrage to salve the guilt of the participants involved. Not to mention the landfills full of victims of this atrocious practice of human sacrifice discarded as ‘medical waste’ or sold off to the highest bidder for medical experimentation. They’re no better or safer than the back alley coat hanger procedures and the resulting mess ends up in the Emergency Dept anyway.
Yes, this matter is a state matter.
As it now stands abortion clinics are no different than drug addict clinics handing out needles and drugs to the addict to enable their behavior. Both behaviors are choices one makes each and every time....until one’s enjoyment of brings the unwelcomed results.
