Scoop: Trump to meet with Supreme Court candidate Barbara Lagoa on Friday
Axios ^

President Trump plans to meet with shortlisted Supreme Court candidate Barbara Lagoa during a campaign visit to Florida on Friday, according to two sources familiar with his plans.

What we're hearing: Sources who know both Trump and Lagoa say they still expect the president to pick Judge Amy Coney Barrett, but they view the Lagoa meeting as a wild card because they say she has a charismatic personality that would appeal to Trump.

The majority view in Trump’s inner circle is that Barrett would be easier to confirm because senators are familiar with her. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has told Trump that senators feel comfortable with Barrett. A source close to the process said anything that complicates the confirmation proceedings — and allows more time for Democrats to inject “mischief” — is to be avoided at all costs. More education would be needed for senators who are less familiar with Lagoa, the source added.

I have no idea how either of these women will rule from the SC bench - after Roberts, Souter, Kennedy, and now Gorsuch, how can any conservative presume to know? Only liberal justices are apparently capable of remaining true to their stated principles.

But by all accounts, Barrett is four years younger than Lagoa. That's an entire presidential term. Given RBG's passing and the advanced ages of both Breyer and Thomas, appointing the youngest conservative justice possible seems like the best approach.

That sums it up. Don't give the Dems any chance to play games - stalling tactics like last-minute surprise witnesses that can't fly to DC, etc.

Barrett already went thru a confirmation just 3 years ago, Dems didn't have anything on her then

Get this over with ASAP and get back to the election campaign

Ridiculous. Yes Trump is so shallow that her charms would turn his head and make change his mind. Idiots.

...3 years is a long time though. She may be late returning a book to the library, under tipped a waiter, cut down a tree in her back yard...lots of stuff can happen.

So how long after the President decides against nominating Lagoa will the RATS begin using it to call him an anti-Hispanic bigot?

The Rats are not going to like this woman of Cuban ancestry. She fought pro bono against them while helping the American family of Elian Gonzalez in their failed attempt to keep him from being shipped back to Cuba.

The short list is getting VERY short.

But certain members of the Senate Judicial Committee are already sharpening their spears and digging DEEP into oppositional research to hurl at whoever gets picked.

Expect Chameleon Harris to be the most aggressive of the inquisition minions of the Deep State, and to lead the charge. They are going to have to get their licks in pretty fast.

By that standard, look at Allison Jones Rushing. Federalist Society, Cristian, Clerked for Thomas. And she is only 38.

ACB clerked for Antonin Scalia.

She is an originalist - schooled by Scalia.

She is PRO 2A.

She was just confirmed. THIS IS THE KEY. This empowers Republicans to speed this along.

I think this is a signal that Barbara Lagoa is next up to bat after Amy Barrett or at least likely to be one of the next few if she is well-received and nothing comes up in response to this meeting. I’m okay with that, so long as the right people are checking carefully before names make it onto the list. Republicans frequently make mistakes choosing justices, while democrats never do.

Yes. If McConnell is half as smart as I think he is, he will skip the judicial committee and take up the nomination directly for a confirmation vote. Especially since the apparently- leading candidate was just vetted two or Three years ago. ( alternatively: hold and complete committee hearing in one afternoon period).

Assuming it is true that if Mark Kelly wins in AZ, he can be seated in November, it is best to speed it up. Life can throw curveballs, and given how weird this year has been so far, I would be more at ease if we have someone in either before the election, or before the next Senate is sworn in in the first week of January.

I was hoping we’d have a VOTE by Friday, but okay. Video conference? Let’s get this done! Time is of the essence.

RBG would supposedly not have been dead yet.

Trump has apparently been getting info leaked to him about her health. It’s why he updated his SCOTUS list out of the blue a week or so back.
