Republican Maine Sen. Susan Collins is down five points to her Democratic challenger Sara Gideon, a poll released Friday shows.

According to a New York Times-Siena College poll, Collins is behind Gideon 44 percent to 49 percent with less than two months before the November 3 elections. The poll did however show that 50 percent of voters view Collins very favorable or somewhat favorable compared to 47 percent who did not feel the same, The Hill reported.

This looks to be a tough election season for Collins. In 2014, her lowest poll margin over her Dem opponent was 20%. Of course, this was before she had to take a stand on Trump's GOP Supreme Court nominees. Maine has been getting increasingly liberal, so perhaps this is the GOP's last hurrah there at the statewide level.

Looks like the NY Times paid for the poll. What could possibly be wrong with it.

Because when a Republican (RINO in this case) does not present a large difference between themselves and a Democrat, the Democrat wins. Republicans don’t want any more RINOS.

I saw a poll for her the other day that said she was 12 down from her opponent this was before Ginsbergs death.

I guess it won’t be too much of a loss for us if Collins is defeated. But how bad is her opponent?

The NYT poll for 2014 showed her ahead by 19%. While it’s possible the NYT has become far more ideological in its polling, the numbers are nonetheless worrisome. Basically, this is a 25% swing against Collins.

So why not go out supporting your party? I know there has to be something in it for her, but I am not seeing it. The only good thing that can be said about the Dims is that they ALWAYS back their party, ALWAYS.

But how bad is her opponent?

She supports female genital mutilation practiced by Muslims in Maine by preventing a vote to outlaw the practice in the State Senate.

Spineless worthless bitch; she does not know what the real issue is—defeating the opposition. Another case for term limits.....

She cemented her political obituary today with her Supreme Court pronouncement.

It’s unfortunate, because as bad as she was, her replacement will be infinitely worse.

Actually, Maine has been trending more conservative lately (Trump was within 1 point of winning Maine in 2016). It's certainly still more middle of the road than most of us would like. I think this is only a tough race because of Kavanaugh. I still guarantee she will win 😉

I don’t believe this for a minute Trump has done amazing things turning over regulations on the fishing and lobster industry there after Obama Biden decimated the industry!! I believe that Collins not backing Trump is her problem with her low poll numbers AND she has NEVER stood for a damn thing one way or the other!!

Her mistake was turning her back on MAGA and President Trump.

Sorry, toots. Game over.

Any loss is a huge loss. Collins is the last GOP pol able to win statewide in Maine. After her, the GOP is extinct in that state.

Also, last I looked, Collins was more right-wing than every single Democrat except Manchin.

And Democrats almost never vote for GOP judicial nominees. Collins almost always does.

You’d think someone would make it worth her while if she’s going out anyway. Now she’s got some chips on the table.

She saved the Kavanaugh Supreme Court appointment recently despite her RINO record. She's fighting for her political life. It's far better for her to continue as a Maine Senator than to turn the seat over to any Democrat IMO.

11 Democrats voted for Clarence Thomas.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarence_Thomas_Supreme_Court_nomination#Full_Senate

They had 57 Democratic senators. Not only did they not vote in lockstep against Thomas as they had against Robert Bork, they dared not filibuster Thomas’s nomination. That’s one reason to nominate Lagoa. It will win the GOP Cuban and Hispanic votes during the polls, and give the Dems pause about voting against her. Do they fell lucky? A Democrat who voted against Thomas may have lost his seat as a result.
