Trump says his Supreme Court nominee will be a woman that he names next week

President Donald Trump said Saturday evening that he will choose a candidate to fill the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's Supreme Court seat next week and his candidate will be a woman.

"I will be putting forth a nominee next week. It will be a woman," Trump said during a rally in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Trump told rallygoers that Ginsburg's "landmark rulings, fierce devotion to justice and her courageous battle against cancer inspire all Americans," offering prayers to the justice's family.

The President also noted her friendship with the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, saying it's "a powerful reminder we can disagree on fundamental issues, while treating each other with decency, dignity and respect."

He also discussed how he has the power to fill her vacant seat.

"So, Article 2 of the Constitution says that the President shall nominate justices of the Supreme Court. I don't think it can be any more clear, can it?" Trump asked, prompting chants of "Fill that seat!" from the rally crowd.

The President told reporters earlier Saturday there about 45 people on his list, but he does have a "short list" for potential nominees.

A source told CNN that Trump specifically has said he would "love to pick" federal appeals Judge Amy Coney Barrett, who is a favorite among religious conservatives, but doubts he'll secure support from the US Senate. Barrett is among Trump's list of 20 potential conservative nominees he released earlier this month in an attempt to galvanize his base.

Lisa Murkowski. That’s the only way he’s going to get her support for whomever he nominates.

Go look at the reaction his initial reaction got. Being classy in this case benefits him a lot

yeah some conservatives will be disappointed for like 5 minutes and then see how great a candidate she is in her presser and then be disgusted and defend her against Democrat attacks.

This is all very predictable how this is going to go. In a perfect world, Trump would pick Barrett as he would prefer but a failed nomination does nothing for him or republicans right now. They need a clear path to the votes to nominate her. RBG is so far looney left that any Republican is frankly a huge improvement. People will get over the butt hurt quickly.

I will bet it will be Barbara Lagoa from Florida. Her father escaped from Cuba and she’s strongly anti-communist. She doesn’t have all the baggage ACB has and has the support of evangelicals. Her being a Latina will bring even more Hispanics to add to his support. It would be a good contrast to the far left liberal Latina currently on the court. Because the Dems had such praise for the current one on the court, they would truly be hypocrites if they give her the Kavanaugh treatment.

“...because of the need for a quick confirmation and two Senators likely to abstain (Collins and Murkowski), Lee and Mittens votes are needed so, ACB is out.”

Therefore, we are likely to get an unknown Latina (read: safer pick) who more likely drifts leftward over her tenure. That’s the problem with this entire scenario — a strong immovable conservative cannot easily be confirmed. That said, it’s entirely possible the next Senate will be even less friendly to a victorious DJT.

Knowing how the democrats try to smear those whom they oppose, they’ll probably use their old go to ploy and accuse her of teenage years acts of sexual perversion

Will Biden perform a “Smell Test” on her? Probably not since she will most certainly be over the age of 12.

On a serious note this is a genius move by President Trump. Just dare the dems to attack her just before the election. That would seriously hurt the dems with the female voters. The only other option is to go softball on her like the media does with dems every day and risk angering and losing their base who will be calling for blood. Its a win-win situation. Yep, a genius move by Grand Master Trump!

I like her but she is wrong when it comes to the 2ND!

Violent criminals can either be locked away for good or they can serve their time and should have ALL of their rights returned .. in my opinion!

“In Kanter v. Barr, 919 F.3d 437 (7th Cir. 2019), Barrett wrote a lengthy dissent in favor of gun-ownership rights for felons.

Barrett stated that while the government has a legitimate interest in denying gun possession to felons convicted of violent crimes, there is no evidence that denying guns to nonviolent felons promotes this interest, and that denying such rights is a violation.”

Trump better sit down with these people personally. Don’t trust these young women on the bench who are bleeding hearts. Emotional arguments can be what carries the day. ACB...what does she actually believe...She got kids from Haiti. Was that on the up and up? Was every I dotted and every T crossed? Could be another Roberts situation

And she sailed through her appeals court confirmation vote 80-15

Which means she got a lot of Democrat votes. That doesn't worry you?

um no he should replace Justice Thomas with another black male conservative. First of all I’m 100% against tokenism or identity politics, but lets get real, there should be at least ONE black person on the highest court out of nine justices. I do believe conservative black men are available too. Unlike females, it’s not easy to find a true black female conservative with a good conservative record.

Nope...Judicial philosophy and willingness to go against the grain need to be front of mind. Not where she lives and how she’ll make women feel.

Nothing really matters if Trump loses Florida by 10,000 votes. Lagoa will juice Cuban turnout in Miami and give Trump votes. You take the win and live to fight another day. It’s almost like another VP pick for Trump in how she will deliver votes in a critical state.

You may be right but please give reasons to believe that she will vote in favor of the Right to Life.
