Progressive group to spend $10M in ad campaign on Supreme Court vacancy

Demand Justice, a progressive outside group, is planning to spend $10 million on an ad campaign aimed at preventing the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's Supreme Court seat from being filled until after the presidential inauguration in January.

"No confirmation til after Inauguration Day," Brian Fallon, the group's executive director, tweeted on Friday night.

The spending, confirmed to The Hill by a source familiar, is an early sign of what is likely to be a massive spending battle on both sides over the fate of the Supreme Court seat, in what was already an unprecedented election year.

Democrats are already gearing up for a fierce fight to try to prevent Senate Republicans from filling the vacancy, arguing that it should be filled next year by whomever wins the White House in November.

"The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice. Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president," Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a tweet.

But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced within hours of the news of Ginsburg's passing that he will give whomever President Trump nominates a vote.

"President Trump’s nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate," McConnell said in a statement.

Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate. That means Democrats and their allies would need to win over four Republican senators to prevent McConnell from filling the seat.

Fix Our Senate, a Democratic outside group, also announced a six-figure ad buy encouraging voters to contact senators and urge them not to fill the seat. The ad includes clips of McConnell's decision to refuse to give Merrick Garland, then-President Obama's nominee in 2016, a hearing or a vote.

Conservative groups didn't immediately announce ad campaigns. But they are likely to pour in money in support of whomever Trump picks and to sway swing-vote Republicans and vulnerable Democratic senators, including Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.).

Ginsburg's seat is the first Supreme Court vacancy since 2018, when Republicans confirmed Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The Brennan Center estimates that nearly $10.37 million was spent in TV ads during Kavanaugh's confirmation battle.

we look forward to PDJT nominating a well-qualified person who respects our constitutional republican system of government including our Bill of Rights

and we look forward to Senate Leader McConnell (who’s been rather good at processing judicial nominations) setting strict and reasonable time limits for the nomination to be approved by the Senate. No long drawn out BS circuses like what the evil evil Demo basturds did in smearing Kavanaugh!

Let them waste their money. The Turtle has already stated there will be a Senate vote on President Trumps nominee to replace RGB. The only RINO senator to run to the press to say she will not vote for RGB’s replacement before the election is Murkowski. I expect Collins to join her.
Surprisingly, Romney has stated that rumors he will oppose are not accurate. If he does vote to confirm then the only other wild card is Alexander, a Never Trumper. But, Pence will break the tie if Alexander joins with Murkowski and if Collins joins her. Given this, Alexander may not choose to oppose in a futile effort.

Also Alexander is an old friend of McConnell. I dont think he will oppose. I think he votes for judges so not a problem.

Im optimistic, but he didn’t specifically say when they’d vote on the replacement.

we assume its sooner rather than later, but until its on the calendar, its not set.

This was already planned out before she died.....she’s been dying all year long.....so they were prepared for this and in fact likly kept her body alive past her departure date so they could bring it up to the election wire....they’ll eat up at least two weeks burying her and the media will be glad to assist.

The time period from George Floyd’s death to his burial was around 2 weeks. I don’t know if Ginsburg’s families will try to stretch that long. I’m fairly confident that Trump will announce his nominee in one week or at most 2 weeks.

Collins made a statement about the death & didn’t comment on replacement. I think she will vote to confirm. She’s in a very tough election.

I think their sloganeering about no confirmation vote till after Inauguration Day, is an unspoken hope that Biden will be the president who chooses the next Supreme Court justice.

if Trump is re-elected, there would be no need to put it off based on the reasoning that we want to see who gets elected president.
